Dreadful tragedy. Happens now and then. A good reminder about the importance of site selection.

IAT backpacking trip
I spent the weekend with friends backpacking a roughly 19-mile section of the Ice Age Trail in southern Wisconsin. Even though we got hit by a couple of storms and it was super hot and buggy, I had a fantastic trip. Highlights from the trail. Lots of sunshine on the prairie. https://lh3.googleuserco...

Yup. And El Niño often means a mild winter, which could result in less snow and that's not always a good thing in the western states.

Really enjoyed that trip report. As always, love it when you showcase gear and skills in action. Watched the videos with my little guy and he liked the digging bear. Great photos, too. Rough country, rough weather, but I'm glad you got out, Blackdog. Thank you for sharing. Time for me to hit the tra...

California by Edan Lepucki
Recently finished California by Edan Lepucki. Literary fiction but worth a read, especially for those interested in the so-called "slow boil" collapse of society, heading for the hills, etc. Fans of Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel should enjoy it. http://www.amazon.com/California-A-Novel-Eda...

Re: Getting into car camping
Something to note, in SHTF if you can bring a vehicle in a bug out I think most of us would. So car camping is not beyond the realm of practice for a real SHTF bug out. I agree with this. We try to do a lot of car (minivan) camping as a family. And in the event we need to evacuate our home, one of ...

Looks very promising. A bit bummed we won't see a lot of King Shark. I'm a big fan of the New 52 comic. Really hoping they don't screw the pooch with this movie.
