Re: $400 budget, whats on offer?

I would keep all options open. I have an Extra class license and still have FRS and CB radios in my shack and in my truck. For $400 I would get your Tech license, put a 2m and CB in your primary vehicle plus a 2m HT. If you get them used you can do that under $400. Shok You did see where he said he...

Count me out then. It's ridiculous to have a radio club where calls are kept secret.

Re: [NET] 12 DEC 2011

You make so many assumptions You assume a persons address in the FCC database is thier address or is correct and up to date You assume a person's callsign is somehow linked to thier screen name, or that they are even a ham and have not used someone elses callsign You assume a person uses an ip they...

Re: [NET] 12 DEC 2011

No disrespect was meant. Just as you shared your opinion i shared mine. Reading your post it would seam if you was in the op's postion to decide if you should post callsigns you would have. Maybe I am wrong, but that is how I took it. A persons privacy should always be thier decission.(my opinion) ...

Not to nitpick, because frankly i love the designs (well done indeed). But is there an option for us eastern-washingtonians rather than "Western Washington". Or maybe one that says just "Washington"? If not i'd still love to get one, just asking. I was wondering the same thing. My wife and her fami...

Thanks KJ...I'll have to give up my other hobbies before I pick up some of those...but, I'm all about buying the right tool for the job. On a side note, the local Shack had this bad-boy on sale for $70 (Regular $100)...so...yeah, I grabbed it. This things pretty huge for a "radio" (shown with my E1...

Re: [NET] 12 DEC 2011

Regarding callsigns, screen names and privacy, my personal feeling is that anyone really intent on keeping their info (name, addy, etc.) private probably shouldn't be a ham, or on the Internet for that matter. Privacy is an illusion once you connect with the "outside world". Your callsign can be lo...

Duh! I guess it helps if I actually type it instead of cutting and pasting it from your sig. That slashed zero was screwing up the search. :)

Is there going to be a QSO this Sunday on Echolink? If there is I'll try to make it, but the wife and I are flying out to Monterey, CA tomorrow morning, so I may not be able to get the laptop up and connected in time. Also, I'm not finding that callsign of yours in the FCC database, did you type it...

Re: Receiving CB Transmissions? Gear Tips? Tricks?

What are some good larger batteries to keep around? I know regular car batteries were mentioned, and gel cells. My primary uses will be for charging batteries, realistically, that I can run my smaller gear off of, so I'm really looking for low wattage with lots of amp-hours, so I can recharge my st...

- To communicate with emergency services in a localized SHTF. Flood and bush fire are very real threats in my AO. Re: Receiving CB Transmissions? Gear Tips? Tricks?

To keep it legal, 2m ham equipment can only talk to 2m ham equipment, etc. However, there's a lot of advantages to having a 2m handheld to go gather food with and a 2m base station back at the house. There are non-legal options that modify that statement that we can't discuss here. There's all kind...

Re: Receiving CB Transmissions? Gear Tips? Tricks?

Two things to keep in mind with the FRS/GMRS handies: Because they're so cheap and commonly available, in a PAW or SHTF situation, everybody and their brother is gonna be on those things, so trying to reach the rest of your group/family will probably be difficult. And... Because they're so cheap and...

Re: $400 budget, whats on offer?

Just found this Google beofeng ebay, these radios are dual band and run a little under $50, accessories for them are JUST as cheap as the Puxing ones Only 2 watts though, and I'm not seeing any FCC type acceptance on them (should be Part 15 and/or Part 90). If they're not type accepted then A) they...
