Re: Peanut Butter prices

There was a story on NPR about this at least a month ago. 1) Too much subsidy for corn to get turned into ethanol means it's more profitable to plant corn and have a poor yield than to gamble on peanuts. This leads to fewer acres of planted peanuts. 2) Terrible ongoing drought in most of the peanut-...

Shelving For Preps, But With an Exciting Twist!

So shelving isn't supposed to be a big puzzler in the preps game. Buy some wood, buy some nails, and just sort of bodge it all together. You'll either end up with shelves or modern art that will sell for so much money you can afford to hire someone to build you shelves. Except for me. You see, the o...

And another from Central Ohio

What's the minimum number for a chapter? We've got to be getting close by now.

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

As an aside, silicone spray on the black weatherstripping around your doors will prevent your door from freezing stuck to the weatherstripping. This is a very common problem for "frameless" doors where the glass seals directly against the weatherstripping.

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

Hit the snow shovel, or any other shovel, with PAM, or MUCH better, silicone spray. Coat it pretty wet, then wipe it around with a paper towel, and wipe off the excess. Snow will no longer stick. We have two shovels in each car 1) A "sport utility shovel" (dumbest name ever!) for clearing drifts, di...

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

Hella 500FF fogs if you've got the room for them. Cheap and highly effective.

Hella Micro DE fogs if you're space-limited. Much more expensive, not quite as good, but only the size of a pop can.

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

Yup, I've seen fog like that myself a time or two, but it's pretty rare, at least in the places I've lived. Evidently it's common by you. It's not that common, really. It's just that it's all-or-nothing around here. We're either clear or socked in like a horror movie. There's none of this "light wi...

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

There's another reason why fogs are mounted low... There's usually a layer of clear air between the road and the fog and putting the fogs down low allows them to penetrate through that layer. We definitely don't get that clear layer in fog around here. It's either a clear night or solid from the gr...

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

Regarding the video, I'm not sure you can do this with a GoPro (I have one, so I know what its limitations are). If we get snow at night this year (won't be until late December through mid-Feb), I've got a camera that I can set and lock the exposure on. I'll try to remember to shoot a video of all t...

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

Snow/rain/fog with respect to high beams or not is a VERY personal decision. It'll vary from person to person and even with the same driver in different cars. Took me a long time to figure out why. Water in the air preferentially reflects incident light back where it came from. In other words, most ...

Never did a formal introduction for myself, actually.

I'm Ty from Delaware County, Ohio.

You know, I was a bit surprised there isn't a Central Ohio chapter of ZS. Seems like there's a fair number of people from around here.

Re: Auto repair nightmares

Disclaimer: I'm an auto mechanic, so I deal with your nightmares basically every day. Tonight, I had one of my own. My wife's car is a station wagon that came without roof rails for a rack. The "other" version of the same car has roof rails that allow a rack to be installed. To be able to place a ra...

Re: What's with CB Channel 6 and 11?

I had a lot of these same questions before I studied up to get my Amateur Extra Class license. Lets see if I can dredge some of that up now... There is no regulation in the US on how far away you may talk to someone. .. I'm sorry, I thought it was obvious from context that I meant on the Citizen's ...

Re: Cold weather and you: Part 2, Vehicles.

OK, it's my first post. Had planned on lurking for a while, then posting an intro thread properly, etc. But... I'm a mechanic. I work with drivetrains several times a week. I get to deal with all the weird labels marking departments throw on crap and have to translate them in to what the physical re...
