Re: Best SHTF Rifle for the money

I didn't say it couldn't be done. But I would be willing to bet about anything that wasn't a mall ninja, internet gun guru that made that shot. That shot takes skill and practice. Those are two things that I see a shortage of every time I go to the range. Old guys shoot hundred year old milsurps ou...

Re: Best SHTF Rifle for the money

I still think given that an LRB standard M14 costs more than a SCAR-17, it doesn't belong in a "for the money" thread, especially given the difficulty arguing for a thousand yard rifle for "SHTF" use. It's half the price of an FN FAL and within a few hundred of a Steyr Aug and FS2000, all of which ...

Re: Best SHTF Rifle for the money

For an unloaded Bulgy waffle, I'm getting 8.2 oz on my scale. Loaded with 30 steel cased FMJs, I'm getting 25.6 oz. Unloaded ribbed steel mag, 12.4 oz. Loaded with the same FMJs, 29.8 oz. Good info, thanks! 1000 yard shot with a M14?!?!?!?! Not saying it can't be done, but when you factor in ballis...

I don't like leaving all my mags loaded. I keep probably 2 or 3 with each gun.
I'm lazy so I keep all my mags loaded. Makes it easy to just grab a can with mags in it and another can with your range glasses/muffs.

Re: Cost of 5.45 x 39 vs 5.56

Yea take advice from someone telling you to get a 6900. I'm sure it'll work as well as my $2200 SR-15 did before I kicked .223 to the curb. Especially since it's a backup to the 6920/SOCOM. What's more likely? Red dawn Russian paratroopers where you need to hand out 6 AR15s or a financial hardship ...

Re: Cost of 5.45 x 39 vs 5.56

Really enjoying this conversation. Remember, I'm not planning to get out of 5.56, I'm just planning to add another caliber. Realistically, I have 6 complete AR rifles in 5.56. Selling one of them and getting a 5.45 upper, I should be able to more or less break even. At this point, I really can't af...

Re: Cost of 5.45 x 39 vs 5.56

The problem with switching calibers to save money is, by the time you buy another weapon system with the magazines needed to run it you would have been much better off using the same amount to buy a few crates of 5.56. Switching calibers isn't cheap. When I sold my SR-15 to go to a 7.62x51mm M14 pla...

Re: The Mosin Nagant- The LAST Great Deal In SHTF Firearms

The last great deal in SHTF firearms is a 5.45mm Ak74. If you wanted you could go even more ghetto and buy a parts kit for $300 and build it yourself. You can still buy crates of 5.45mm for next to nothing. (just check GB) Great caliber, serviceable weapon system. I'd have one if I didn't dedicate ...

This week's new Russian Assault rifle, no not last week's!

Modified Russian AEK-971. I like this design a lot more than the AK-12 that gets thrown around. I'd love to see one (and an AN-94)stateside but, that won't be happening I'm afraid.

Re: Penetration of 7.62x54R heavy ball MG ammo?

It will work the same or close enough to make no difference as far a penetration goes. Heavy ball was used in machine guns since the bullet had better BC for long range shooting. An appropriate rifle plate will stop all rounds, even AP.

Re: Best SHTF Rifle for the money

Chopping down the quote tree, That makes more sense then. I didn't know there would be that much of a difference between steel AK magazines. Check LRB for $25 M14 magazines. They run bulk specials every now and again. You can also get them from 44 mag but, they upped the price to $35 during th...

Re: Best SHTF Rifle for the money

Not saying AR>M1A, just saying check your facts a bit, and make sure that they are both true and applicable to the parameters of the question. My response is applicable because you buy a weapon system never a rifle. If the M14 system wasn't in the running why is it on the list? Mags have never been...

. http://www.jbmballistics.com/  While I have an undying love for my m1a, I think they are still way overpriced. Depends. The machining that goes into an M14 receiver is pretty extensive and that means more money. The OP is asking opinions on best rifle for the money. Dollar for dollar, I jus...

Re: Best SHTF Rifle for the money

I voted for the M-14 since it's the only common caliber firearm that bucks the Midwest wind. 5.56x45 is a great round for those people on the coast or in heavily forested areas so if that was my AO I'd probably pick up a Swiss Sig 550/551/553 or a KAC SR-15. Parts and ammunition resupply in the SHT...

Re: Russia Nearing Final Stages For New Assault Rifle

Caseless ammunition is the future. No new Russian rifle will be adopted regardless. They are literally throwing away NIB AK-74s over there due to a surplus of arms and have zero funds to start a R&D program. Refitting their army with a brand new rifle is a fantasy. Hows the research on that coming?...

THREAD NECROMANCY! Since I've been gone, a caliber has come and almost gone: The .327 Federal Magnum. Gives you 6 shots on a J-Frame. Can be used as a trainer, with .32acp, moving up to .32 S&W Short, .32 S&W Long, then moved into defensive cartridges with .32 H&R Magnum and .327 Fed Mag. Too bad s...

Re: The first BOV in our soon to grow BOV Fleet.

You are going to want to check the local laws of your state, and any other state that you are travelling through. That said, for a road going vehicle, IMHO, this is a bad idea. Its going to attract attention, and not in a good way. Yep. I'm pretty sure the widespread availability of 30-06 AP rounds...
