Re: You're a Winner!

I would open up an ORV park... there is no good off-road trails here. Donate new vehicles and equipment to local Search And Rescue chapters. Open up some half-way housing to help people get of the streets and retrained for new jobs. Also some low income housing for those that cannot work due to medi...

Re: Thurston county shooting locations?

Larry's is now Cascade Arms, but still right next to Lover's Package there in Lacey. Then of course Wal-Mart, Cabela's, and Wholesale Sports carries firearms too in Hawk's Prairie. There is also a gun shop between Downtown Oly and Cascade. Rock Candy is right off of Highway 8, not too far from Summi...

Re: Best Method to Siphon Gas Between Cars You Own?

Siphon? Most thieves don't even bother to siphon gas anymore... many don't even check to see if you have a locking gas cap or not. Instead you need to get a new gas tank if they steal your gas around here. Most new cars have in-tank or near tank electric fuel pumps, so all you need to do is pull the...

Re: Breaking into your own car... that YOU own.

I was in a parking lot and two ladies asked for my help getting their car open because they locked the doors with the keys in the ignition. I got a coat hanger from work and spend a couple minutes trying to get it to catch. Then I decided to just try the passenger door. It was unlocked  I have...

Ok, this thread will be to talk about, and laugh/cringe at NOT expensive stuff (because we all know that good gear is expensive), but to tell stories of normal thing you found that were SERIUOSLY overpriced... <snip> Any body else ever run into ridiculously marked items??? And not been able to talk...

Re: Do firearm increase in value over time?

Here's several of the most common factors in a nutshell; If the device has been banned from foreign import, prices will increase. If the device has been banned from domestic manufacture, prices will increase. If the device was produced in small numbers but later develops a cult following, prices wi...

Re: WarmDirt - Year-round growing in cold climates?

Once he gets all the quirks ironed out I think he could make some money selling it to preppers and gardeners. I think it would use too much electricity to use on a larger scale, but would be great for keeping some of the herbs and such growing year round.

Re: My sister's car accident: March 16th 2012

It is good to hear no one was seriously injured (they must have been wearing their seatbelts) Luckily I am not often in the passenger seat, but I have given this type of "what if" scenario some thought in the past since my dad has some heart issues. After grabbing the steering wheel with one ...

Do you need a tent? NO.
Do you need shelter? YES.

It doesn't have to be a tent, tents are just easier to put up and can offer more privacy and room.

Re: DRY BAG BARGAINS AT WALMART

I took them on a kayaking trip, and promptly threw them away afterward. Ok, so in all honesty, I only used the two smaller ones, and I didn't throw them away, I just will never make the mistake of using them as "dry bags" ever again. I put my wallet, pocket change, watch, etc into the small one. I p...

Re: Expectations and prices of "emergency" items?

I expect gasoline prices to rise very sharply, but then again it is a commodity, not an "emergency" item. I then expect it to drop to about 20% more than the previous going rate. Any excuse to raise the price of gas.. And of course guns & ammo prices are going to rise as well, but those will settle ...

I just have cheap ones in my BOB. I started out with the Wally World specials, then "upgraded" to some that were part of some industrial medicine cabinet. I don't know if they are any better, but the roll is a little thicker.

Have you considered single shot break-action? The Rossi matched pair is really cheap, and accurate, and gives you a .410 as well.

Re: Gas Cans Scarce in a Disaster?

A couple years ago we had a real nasty winter storm up here. Some areas were without power for weeks... some major roads were closed down for a week! I was working at Wally World (it automotive no less) during this storm, and we went from over 100 cans in stock to ZERO in a single day... (And manage...

The easier option would cost a few dollars, but would save you time and sweat... Build a box out of treated lumber and do the same thing, but fill it with styrrofoam peanuts or some other insulation that won't be affected by moisture. Paint the box black or cover with a black tarp to utilize the wa...

My parents got a money order once, and it appeared to have cleared their bank account so they shipped the item out. A week later they got a notice that it in fact, had bounced

Just don't accept checks PERIOD, and only money orders where you can cash them at a local branch (not YOUR bank)

Re: Can't build out? Build up!

I think small apartments would be a hit in the USA, but I don't think they meet zoning regulations in most cities. I could live with a 200sq ft apartment if the price was right... but all there is around here is 500-600 sq and up ft at $500-800/m and up...

Re: SteamPunk!!

It all depends on where you are I guess. I would rather have a river current itself turning a turbine for power then finding some way to heat up the same water to turn a steam turbine. The steam turbine might be a good idea for the summer months when the river starts to go dry, but then again solar ...

Re: related to food storage in a bug in disaster

My parents burn a lot of their trash. Bones sometimes will get burned, but most go to the dogs (Bird bones cooked in a pressure cooker first to break them down so they don't get lodged in their throats). Corn husks, potato scraps, and such go outside in a pile. The goats sometime even let the dogs h...

I think you have to wait before eating it because it doesn't taste the greatest. Once you get hungry enough, you will find it satisfying. You have to eat is slowly so you feel fuller and so your body can digest it better. It is an emergency RATION. Not an emergency binge.

Re: My new Supercharged AWD mid engined daily/BOV. Many pics

All I have to say, is good luck. I would never recommend buying a high mileage vehicle for a mobile work vehicle, no matter how good it runs at the time of purchase (except for maybe diesels) Normally I would say something about posting pictures that show your license plates, but I guess you want to...
