Re: Safelite Flexible Rifle Armor
My memory of dragon skin was that it never really made it past some marketing videos and early field testing; I think the ballistic protection was fine but the individual scales would delaminate and not stay in place. Hot environments are not kind to glue, wet environments usually aren't either.

Re: Safelite Flexible Rifle Armor
I've been curious about this as well; I'm always dubious when its an upstart company with flashy marketing rather then an industry giant trying new things like this, but I'll certainly be curious how it shakes out.
If I recall, dragonskin wasn't so much a flawed idea as a flawed execution, correct?

Re: Help on vest vs belt
Even if you do decide to keep stuff on your chest, having it on a separate chest rig over your armor gives you a lot more flexibility; you can wear just armor, just a chest rig, or both; meaning 3 options rather then 1. For mounted or urban use a belt can be a real pain; more likely to snag on doors...

Re: The Coming Civil War - (Warning: No Politics)
Personally, I think the hardest part of this to deal with from a preps perspective is what to take with you when you bug out. It is tough. Your needs will vary a lot as well. Food is high on the list. Food shortages are going to be a for real thing now. Normally food is near the bottom of my list b...

Re: The Coming Civil War - (Warning: No Politics)
Just to be clear I don't see this as much different than the wildlife refuge take over a few years ago. I have a feeling that it might end similarly or more likely out of sheer boredom. Taking over a few blocks is one thing. Providing lights, running water, schools, security etc is a whole other th...

Re: Seattle: The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
Reddit has been the most direct source of information on the phenomena I have found; of course most information these days is heavily shaded but at the very least you can find photos and first hand accounts. Twitter users of some stripe seem to have already launched a smear campaign against the CHAZ...

I've pretty much ignored these guys because the group makes no sense. CNN can't make any sense of them either. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/03/us/boogaloo-extremist-protests-invs/index.html They seem to be wanting to throw bombs just to throw bombs. That is about as dumb as it gets. I guess they wer...

minor update; decide to chop the side bottle pockets off since they tended to not hold bottles secure enough anyway: http://i.imgur.com/OLghfhM.jpg saved 2.75 oz. Removed the radio access pocket (no picture) and replaced with 1.5" webbing. saved 1.25 oz. removed the stock lid with full double layers...

Thank you all for the congrats; I have some mental patterns to undue but its amazing how quickly your outlook toward the future can improve. current plan: 1) buy second car before wife's work from home ends. I'm trading a 10 minute bike commute for a 30 minute car commute and she will go back to a 3...

Re: Global Debt Time Bomb explodes soon
After two+ years of underemployment I just got a real job. The fact that the company is still hiring right now (and everything else I've seen there) has me fairly optimistic they are in a good spot to weather the coming days, but in case I'm wrong I'm trying to decide how to allocate my first few ch...

Re: Why are tents such ugly damn colors?!
For me the interesting thing about Robens is, that they are one of very, very few tent makers that still use lightweight silicone coated ripstop polyester, which weights a bit more than silnylon (and is more expensive), but is much better in wet conditions and survives longer under UV radiation. Po...

Re: Boots for really long walks
I think I've said this somewhere on ZS before, but there is one significant problem with quality boots that I have noticed from countless testimonials; If you buy good boot, by the time they wear out the company you bought them from is likely completely different from when you bought them. Today 2-3...

Re: The Art of No BOB - WPS
Saw some discussion on this on Reddit today as well; haven't actually watched it yet though. What seems to be common on reddit is the Straw Man Prepper of "I'm going to take my bag of tricks and go live in the woods forever" to which the writers/video makers can spend any amount of time criticizing ...

I think the bank part was key; he applied last time through a larger bank that blew him off; he has since switched to a smaller bank that is actually working with him so the second round seems more optimistic.

Not exactly the same thing but the local businesses that I am aware of filing for SBA PPP funds have all received these funds. My workplace was just told they will NOT be receiving any SBA PPP funds, guess they got on the bandwagon too late. I've been trying the thread the needle of working enough ...

Re: First Strike Rations
First strike rations are just a vacuum pack grab bag of junk food and snacks, a trip to the grocery store could get you the nearly the exact same food, and certainly much better food if you cared to take the time. There is nothing magical about the pop tarts and trail mix they put in the first strik...

I've been hunkered down for the long haul. My local County jail requested 1000 masks from me and its slow going. What kind of jerry cans are those? Are they metal or polymer? Also, can you link to exactly what twin bed frame you used? A shame it was never offered in AWD, As mentioned; the vast majority were AWD, its actually quite rare to happen across a 2wd one. The single biggest impediment to softroading is the fuel tank, which is dead center between the axles and the lowest point on the whole car  It has an impressive s...

Sorry, I pulled that setup apart before I weighed it, and due to other mods I was using a stock FILBE bag so the numbers would have been a bit wonky. the straps saved 8oz, and the belt padding probably added 2oz back on so not too much different from an issue one. https://i.imgur.com/7CTjVfk.jpg?1 h...

Speaking of superstrut, I was having a hard time finding crossbars that I either liked, or could afford. Most are aggressively curved and seemed to all be north of $100. Most roof baskets I see on subarus and the like are sitting VERY high and sucking a lot of wind. I wanted something lower, and mor...

Honda Element BOV
Like many I'm stuck with a BOV optimized for daily life rather then payload, off road performance and range. I used to have a 4runner but have traded down to a honda element; its easier to park in town, gets better fuel milage, is more comfortable on long trips and the cargo space is far more usable...
