I roll with these: http://cgi.ebay.com/USGI-ACU-MOLLE-II-TRIPLE-MAGAZINE-POCKET-30-ROUND-SWAT_W0QQitemZ190353165842QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2c51eece12" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in woodland for my AK, not what you'd call great retention, but they seem to sta...

Re: Kelly Kettle
yeah, I think these are a great design, and more satisfying then hooking up a fuel bottle, but for me even if they don't weigh a ton they'd just take up way to much pack space. think a wood-gas stove or an alcohol burner is more space/weight efficient if less awesome.

Re: Blackhawk! 3-day Assault Pack
I have one, and yay for a book bag or day pack, or a car GHB, nay for dedicated BOB. as said, very tough, well made, comfy enough, good simple design but rigging a sleep system is iffy at best (can be done I know, but not well done). the "3-day" name is only for people tougher then 80% of us normal ...

Re: Couple of great scores at latest REI Garage Sale
I feel like I might get some looks for admitting this...but at the last 2 sales I've been one of the idiots camped on the sidewalk from 11pm the night before. my REI does first come first serve, and only lets the first 20 or so in at once so its still a squeeze but not to bad. and even being in the ...

I have a few headlamps, but all are too dim to use well for foot-watching, which is part of the reason my hands froze, was holding the flippin' flashlight!

chilly night BOB stroll
Just got back from a short stroll with my BOB and BO chest rig (as opposed to the home-unit), in 25 degree (F) weather with good amount of wind; learned and reinforced a few lessons. 1) despite the tactile advantages of fingerless gloves (plus the tacticool look) these are vastly outweighed by the t...

Re: Couple of great scores at latest REI Garage Sale
REI sales (they call them "scratch and dent" sales here) are UNBEATABLE. I took care of christmas gifts at the last one, bought 6 thermarests, all $10 or under and patched 'em up for folks. also got some $250 leather zamberlan boots for $50 which are defiantly my new End of the World boots (much tou...

Re: my BOB alcohol stove
if you are really interested in saving weight, lower the holes on the pop can (make it a wee taller to keep the same fuel capacity) and then you can ditch the pot stand all together. you loose a little stability, but its much smaller and lighter. then just get the standard foil windscreen for around...

Re: Clothing Patterns for Bug Out and PAW Clothing?
unless you need all the material I'd almost recommend felting it a little bit (heed at your own risk, I've never actually tried it), I just know as awesome as the swanndri is it lets a lot of wind in if you don't layer right, a tighter weave or bit of feltedness would make it the bees knees.

Re: Clothing Patterns for Bug Out and PAW Clothing?
in the last 2 years or so I've been scheming like crazy about making my own clothes, (I'm 6'2 and really skinny so sleeves are not my friend) and have just now barely started down the path of learning to sew. definite +1 on the "Cagoule" pattern, pull-overs are the shiz, no zippers or buttons to mes...

most excellent and useful information!
I had a very similar experience with the "Mayday" rations, I'm glad there are better ones out there.

Re: Which USGI pack? Molle II, CFP 90, IBLE, Which is best???
Molle = FAIL. I cringe every time I see a BOB on a molle frame anymore. I bought one when they were cheap on ebay, and I'll admit, it did keep me entertained for a few hours trying to get it all put together right and get it comfortable, but the old pack bag was a joke (would like the to try the new...

Re: Pack suggestions (replacing USGI molle ruck)
I'll throw in my vote for a used ILBE. I bought one off ebay for $100 and hauled 70lbs around for a few weeks, killed my legs and feet but never my back ;P they are camo though, but getting basically a $300 pack for a lot less is pretty awesome, but they are hard to find complete, sometimes you have...

Re: ESS NVG Goggles Question
I have a pair of NVGs and my bro has the "land ops" by ESS (the bigger pair) and I think his are better. I do like the low profile for hats and whatnot, but his just fit better (being massively huge as they are) and has soft foam around them instead of the NVGs which have sort of a soft rubber which...

Re: Good place to pick up a USGI Bivy sack?
I've bought 4-6 USGI biveys off of ebay and never had a problem, one could use re-treated but it's not bad. and I've used 2 diferant ultra-light biveys and while these are the heaviest, they are defiantly the best. OR biveys might compete, but I don't know. these have to be one of my #1 recommendati...

Re: What kind of food is in your BOB?
I have mostly MRE entrees cause I havne't got around to swapping it out for freeze dry, but one thing I really like is a liter bottle of quick oats. you just boil water and combine in a folding bowl and throw in some brown suger and you have one hell of a filling meal (and we all know how important ...

In the quart bags I have 1 full of crackers and pea...
