Re: Bowie chopping vid.

Have you ever had any damage to a knife from chopping? had an edge ripple a little from a hard-assed beech sapling, but that was a while ago, changed things since then. Minor dings, mostly from hitting rocks while chopping. Tip of one of the bowies was blunted by 1/16" by throwing. as long as i am ...

Re: Bowie chopping vid.

It happens sometimes, not here of late.

What kind of damage do you mean? I have messed up a few factory knives. I tend to build my blades with this stuff in mind, but shit also happens.

Re: Anybody EDC fixed blades?

fixed blades are where its at. I have cairried them in what is referred to as "non-permissive" environments- CA, Boston, ect. With the right sheathing and panning its no big deal. Currectly,my primary EDC is a 4 1/2" blade i made in a kydex sheath, strong side forward of my pistol. Folders are alrea...

Re: heaviest blade YOU would carry on the trail/backpacking

over time, i have pared down what i consider essentials- based on what/where i have been/done and the goals of the trip. I'll always be a bit on the heavy side- the Glock and mags are NOT staying behind. The bowie is also in this category, as is fire gear like my zippo and ferro rods. I CAN and have...

Re: heaviest blade YOU would carry on the trail/backpacking

so it looks as if most here are using blades that are say 18-20 OZ? Along with the large blade, my other EDC knives are also there- more than i'l likley NEED, but i'm used to the weight. one thing that has been aparent to me over the years, particularly when traveling in areas that are favored by ot...

Re: melee weapons of choice

"MELEE" huh? I assume that refers to ' fight with mixed/uneven weapons" including firearms. Bowie knives, as always. I don't deviate from them much, as 1) Its a rare day that i do not do some bowie/bowie related atribute training. 2) They frickin' work...well. 3) easy to carry, conceal. 4) i make 'e...

heaviest blade YOU would carry on the trail/backpacking

My familly and i have spent a bit of time on the trail this year. We do a pretty good amount of hiking every year, but this year we are stepping it up. beign a knife guy, and a big knife guy at that, I take a bowie with me for utility/trail use as well as contingencies. Usually, i use it to clear pa...

Re: NAA Mini Sidewinder

The NAA is a decent gun. I bought one in CA about 20 years ago. When it comes right down to it, i no longer think of it as a real weapon. Pull up a chair. Several years ago, OK, like 17, i was on a quest for a good pocket gun, an "always" gun, one that i could shoot well enough to use for impromptu ...

Re: Bandannas *updated 09/30/09

bandanas are a required EDC item in my book, so stupid handy as to be a given. As far as the weapon aspect, Comtech has a great two volume set on bandana/panu/short rope work. good stuff. While i usually run the standard wallmart type bandanas, i admit i like getting diferent ones, but nothing real ...

not trying to go against the grain here, but i looked at some of the pics on your blog. You seem like a capable guy. Why not make a couple? Sheathmaking is not that difficult as long as you are concerned first with a durable product, and not overly concerned with making art. Plenty of resources out ...

Re: reloading exclusively for HD/hunting make sense?

I really can't disagree with any of that Browning. Yes, some reloaders shalf ass what they do...as people do in every other aspect of life. I have no confidence that the court will use my data/loads or test any of it, if it would help in amy way. Tahts my lawwers job- and he will likley minimize thi...

Re: Bear and feral pigs whilst running

Up here, its pill/meth heads, the mountain lions that "do NOT exist in maine" and possibly dump bears way down the line. I run the Glock 20, EDC and for everything. The recoil even with hot loads is pretty mild ( there are those that will BS you and tell you its tough to handle.) The Glock and the 1...

Re: reloading exclusively for HD/hunting make sense?

Reloading for hunting makes a lot of sense to me. What reloading I've done has revolved almost entirely around hunting and I'm still working on some 55 grain soft points I reloaded a couple years ago. A few rds here and a few rds there. I buy and use other hunting ammo, but that's my baseline hunti...

Re: reloading exclusively for HD/hunting make sense?

OH YEAH... CASE GAUGES....have one for each caliber. Use them on EVERY ROUND you load. Sure, it takes a bit to run 500 rounds of 45 through it, but you might catch 1-2 rounds that will not function well ( BUT, even most of my "rejects" shoot just fine) I often have NO rejects( not trying to present ...

Re: Knives and Mainly Knife Sharpeners

in my experiencs, people learn to sharpen more quickly with a larger stone. For general use, a 6-8" stone is fine. If you want to spring for the bigger ones, go for it. with experience and knowlegde, you can keen an edge on a large blade withg as small stone, just have to understand what you are doi...

Re: reloading exclusively for HD/hunting make sense?

Several years ago, i spoke to an experienced attourney about this very issue ( he does the investigations and defends all ME LE shootings) The issues with reloads: 1) stupid people putting poison or other substances into the hollow point (?) 2) others bitching about it. He dismissed the issue out of...

Re: Knives and Mainly Knife Sharpeners

the coarse/fine Diafolds are handy, i have a couple. Good for touch ups and feild maintenance, but not something for heavy regular sharpening, though i have done it on ocasion. They also make larger dual sided hones, though i have not invested in one, as i have a set of 3 12" stones, and they don't ...

Re: Itching for a "Fighting" Knife.

Lots of great knives out there. A few good trainers, too. James A Keating, for large and short blade training. His drawpoint system is outstanding for the smaller knives carried day to day. Asian blade system for the midsize knives-4-8" and of course his ABC system for the bowies. Honorable mention:...

Re: Knives and Mainly Knife Sharpeners

200 knives...and no bag/box/room full of sharpening stones? Off the cuff, I have been very happy with my DMT stones, both the 6" versions and the 12" versions( no longer made, i think) A coarse and fine DMT ( blue and red) will do you. Go easy with these, as with softeror lower quality knives, you c...
