Re: Bug Out Gear Deals (Post 'em when you find 'em) I

Our local Costco just got another shipment of the Cree tactical LED flashlights. 3 pack for $20 including batteries. The first time they got these several months before the holidays, they sold out quite quickly. I am planning on getting some if I can get there before they sell out! According to a re...

The solar solutions that others have posted are the answer. If designed right, it could also double as a hot water heater in the warmer months.

Re: Help me put up a 12 meter guyed tower.

The activator can be something as simple as a bag of salt. You just want to increase the conductivity of the soil. We had a tower once that was up on top of a mountain that had stone and no soil. We couldn't get a good ground. So we hired a well driller crew to come in and sink a well until they hit...

Re: Do the online Ham Radio classes work?

I tried a variety of different ways. I got my Technician Class license by reading the Gordon West books and purchasing software from http://www.hamexam.com/ which is a software package that will help you with all of the different FCC licenses, including some professional licenses. It works very well...

41 is pretty low. Some people are not conscious that low. For me, it's a normal day ending in Y. My lowest recorded number was 21. Below 35, my vision starts to go blank in the middle, but I still have peripheral vision and I can usually find my emergency supplies without assistance. But I am in the...

Re: MRE prices

Depends a LOT on how old they are, and how far you need to ship them. You can buy brand new MREs right off the assembly line for about $8 each (approx $95 a case) with free shipping depending on where you buy them from. Or you can roll the dice and maybe get a better deal on the meals, but pay for s...

Re: Best Low Temp Sleeping Bag?

I have good things to say about the Big Agnes Hog Park. You need the Big Agnes insulated air mattress in order to use it, though. They don't have insulation on the bottom to save weight and bulk. The mattress is the insulation. It fits into a pocket on the bottom side of the sleeping bag. It's the m...

Re: What is the reliability of utility natural gas?

I have exactly two points of data to work with. Other places I've lived before this in my life had no gas service or appliances, and they were run 100% electric service, or wood or oil for heat. Propane tanks are not common where we live. My current residence, where I've lived for just over a decade...

I took our medium Alice packs and did the Hellcat modification on them. They are all kinds of awesome. This involves removing everything from the Alice frame, replacing the straps and kidney belt with MOLLE, putting the pack back on the frame, and adding a MOLLE sleeping bag carrier to the bottom. I...

Re: First test of National Alert System

Late news: We found out this morning that the EAS drill has been reduced from 3 minutes to 1 minute in length. The audio announcement will be about 30 seconds, plus the tones at the beginning and end = approx 50 to 60 seconds total. This came down from the top of DHS. There is speculation that this ...

At home or work until I was forced to leave. Then I have several fallback positions with relatives, several potential BOLs in most compass directions.
