Re: Columbia Gorge Fire

We aren't anywhere near fires either, but the smoke is unpleasant.
It looks overcast like it's going to rain, and can start to bother the throat if outside for very long.

Re: Hurricanes 2017

I've successfully found food grade buckets and lids for free, by asking local groceries or bakeries for empty buckets. They get them for frosting, butter, etc. and are usually willing to part with them for free, because otherwise they just recycle them. If you go that route, be aware that many busy...

Re: New member into this commuity!

I had looked on the 23rd before I posted, to see if there was anything 'spammy' and there wasn't at that time. I'm glad you posted the explanation, as others looking at his posts as they stand now wouldn't see any spam either. Perhaps in future, something like "SPAM REMOVED" could be added at the ti...

Re: New member into this commuity!

Why is this person being labeled a spammer? and to the point of putting one in his/her avatar?! That is rude. People are TOLD to make an introduction post in this forum. - There is NO spam here whatsoever, I merely get the impression that English is not the poster's first language. Spammers usually ...

Re: Remember to check for bugs

Do you do the 3 day freeze? 3 days in the freezer will kill most of the critters/eggs; very common to do for long-storage items, although most people omit that for items stored in the kitchen for daily use. If there is room in the freezer I try to do it when they come home, at least in the summer mo...

Re: Robot Uprising - Or, what to do when AI Does All The Job

First they're servants, then equals, then gods' servants, then gods?

I don't like this brave new world.
Most people will not be in mansions with a fleet of robot servants to attend their every whim.
I think we have a new disaster to prepare for...
I think we need a new acronym.

Re: Flooding in NOLA

I'm personally a bit bitter, I think; when we bought this place 20 years ago, it was not considered anywhere near a flood plain. In fact, we discarded several houses because they were in a flood zone. Because of Katrina, they decided as the ground is rather flat, it rains, & there are rivers around,...

Re: Flooding in NOLA

Not trying to fight, it's a difficult problem... I think the "homeowner" would be between a rock and a hard place: the insurance covers the buildings & contents, not the land. Even if the insurance company did actually pay up, there's not enough there to buy a new place. If they tried to say "bag it...

Re: Flooding in NOLA

The entire area of Western Washington is considered flood plain nowadays, due to the fact the area was carved out by glaciers and is still crisscrossed by rivers. We pay a HUGE amount per month for flood insurance even though the area has never flooded in the entire time records have been kept for t...

But I suppose that is not a 'nice thing' to do.

I'm a great believer in folks getting what they deserve... that old reap what you sow thing.

Re: My Job, My Hell...

There are those who think people can do any nasty thing they want; and, because we are all so 'civilized', nothing bad will happen to them in return. [and feel that]* Those who cause that 'something bad' to happen are monsters. Personally, I believe in justice. One reason I should never have certain...

Looks like there won't be as many people needed on planet Earth.
The trend toward smaller and smaller families continues because of economics.

I suppose they enjoy the repartee.
If the poster is really wanted to go away, simply ignoring them and reporting any post or avatar that breaks the rules usually bores them & they leave.

Re: Children's Toys in the EOTWAWKI.

I was a country kid...
We used to go flatten the tall grass in empty fields or hayfields into rooms.
(It would pop back up in 2 days or so.)
Once the hay was baled, we were allowed to stack the bales up for walls until they came to collect them.

The army men still sell about 50 - 100 to a pack at the dollar stores.

(We used to melt them when they got all messed up. )

sigh.
I should have known better than to try to be serious in this thread.
Perhaps it should go in Off Topic, as it seems to be a joke thread.

I will bow out of it, never fear.

I can see how they're taking a while, if you don't know how to move in that vegetation it's like going through a ball of string.
Not to mention the moss and loose rocks make slippery walking.
But still... they knew they were going to do this, and started fresh.

Re: Expiration date on Rolled Gauze

Band-Aid type bandages might lose some of their stickiness over time, but I've seldom had any problem with old ones if they originally worked well.
If the rolled gauze was yellow I'd toss it, but that must take a very long time.
I have 10 year old gauze that is still white.

Another team gone and only 4 days in?

The main lesson learned so far?
Survival is HARD.
About a fourth of the people have had some sort of injury already.
