Re: Hello from Solvang California

Welcome aboard... I spent many a summer out there in Santa Barbara with my Grandma (who always had water stored under the counter in case of earthquakes... I'd forgotten about that, but I guess it was my first encounter with prepping, and she's the only one on that side of the family who does ANYTHI...

Re: Stuck Slide on AMT 1911, Live round in chamber.

Ok, let me make sure I understand this correctly. Your sister's boyfriend has a pistol, based off the 1911 frame, that has a live round stuck in it. The slide is jammed and nobody has been able to get it loose, in order to remove the round in question. First... Do you like said sister's boyfriend? S...

Re: Bees

We've got two hives right now... They're located ~20 feet from the driveway. On a regular basis, I walk within 6 feet of the hives and just watch em. The only time they've even seemed like they were bothering me was about 10 minutes after I'd smoked the hives and opened them up and rearranged some t...

Yeah, they hit all but one of their stretch goals as well (mostly due to three 5k backers at the last minute). We didn't get an expansion pack for the backers (were short $28k), but everything else looks good. I'll keep an eye on the developer forums\updates and see how it's progressing and let ever...

Re: Dead State - Kickstarter

Down to 4 days left till the kickstarter effort for these guys is done... They've already hit the goal, and the first 2 stretch goals (yes, I helped, so I get the game when it's released!) If you like zombies (and we know you do), and like RPG\small unit tactics (ala Fallout\X-Com), consider buying ...

Re: 12 dead and 3.9 Million Without Power in Mid-Atlantic St

This same front came through Cincinnati last night... Let me say, it was a WEIRD storm. LOTS of microbursts it seems like. TONS of limbs and more than a few large trees. Neighbor at the bottom of the road had a large (6+ ft. in diameter) tree come down. Missed their house by like two feet and is now...

-Your wife was able to convince you that the expensive 600 thread count sheet set she wants is more desirable than the economical 250 thread count set you want because the 600 count has better "thermal retention" properties and would make better bandages. Honestly, we do use 600 thread count sheets...

Re: What is your plans for washing clothes in the event?

Walk down to basement. Put dirty clothes (sorted by color) into washing machine. Add detergent (either homemade or from stockpile). Turn knob. Water is pulled from plumbing lines, having gone through whole house filter, which is attached to cistern. Power is pulled from battery bank, through inverte...

Out of curiousity, whose place is it. I have been studying herbalism/medicinal plants for several years and have created many herbal remedies. I have added a list of "alternative medicine" material I plan on keeping in my storage for use when I can no longer run to the local store to grab a bottle of this or that. I was also given an e...

We're actually having a similar discussion in our household. We're foodies. We LIKE good food (it's also more nutritious typically) and we tend to make almost everything from scratch. We don't store much plain white rice... We do however have organic arborio rice and sushi rice. We're about to stock...

Okay, last few weeks. Two weekends ago: Got an entire trailer load of aged horse manure from a buddy of mine and topped off the raised beds (2 @ 8'x8', 2 @ 4'x8', 2@16'x8') Used the majority of the rest of the manure to fertilize all the fruit (blackberry starts, blueberry bush, 2 apple tree sapling...

Re: Feds and Utility Companies Face Off Over Solar EMP Threa

That does look like a very nice setup and I agree on both the protection against a surge from the grid and the thought that buying solar might have been better than buying the backup generator. I'm weighing the same choices myself right now. However, my question about the EMP issue is looking in th...

Re: Feds and Utility Companies Face Off Over Solar EMP Threa

Not a bad plan but I will throw a little cold water into the battery bank equation. >>snip<< In short current battery technology would require a huge and very expensive battery system to run a house for 24 hours. It would likewise need a very large solar array and/or generator to recharge the batte...

Re: Feds and Utility Companies Face Off Over Solar EMP Threa

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't part of the big worry over EMP (solar or otherwise) that it will fry just about anything with a circuit board and significant amounts of wiring? If such truly is the case, won't it just fry your solar/wind system's inverter along with anything much ...

Yep, this is why a solar\wind rig is near the top of our list, and we'll hopefully be starting to add capacity in the next 2-3 years (yes, that's AFTER the peak danger period starts)
