Re: The Dreaded "Reset Button"
ok...I'm a gardener (master level). Which sounds like it could come in handy. BUT how did I get to be a gardener is the reason why I would have lots of use. I became a gardener to feed my family, literally. My kids were young, I had 3, we had no money ($17k a year max). I learned to garden to put fo...

Re: Money Saving Tips
While we keep a credit card, we always pay of any balance as soon as the next paycheck. We also keep a large supply of food storage, living with "store what you eat and eat what you store" method of food prepping. By doing this, we have reduced the amount of times we need to go to the store (from on...

Re: Odd but true, MA law.
When I took the class for my class A LTC, we went over that in great detail. Though there is a Castle Law (and to my knowledge it hasn't been superseeded by any other), the great state of Mass would prefer it if you just died rather than protect yourself. There are so many rules and regs that...

If it were me with that set up I would: build a better root cellar/improve storage area (include storage for other items needed for blacksmithing) double the fruit production work on alternate heating/cooking methods that don't rely on propane perhaps install an alert system build that addition...it...

Re: Peppermint
I have many different kinds of mint; spearmint, peppermint, bergamot, lemon mint, apple mint, cat mint (catnip), orange mint, penny royal (flea balm) and chocolate mint. Most mints are good for an upset tummy and also as a "pick me up" type of tea. People used to flavor a lot of things like frosting ...

VERY cool! We are thinking about a cabin for guests and one of those would work pretty well. You have done a great job so far.

Re: It always happens when you least expect it.
Ever since 6th grade, when I was in the shower and the alarm went off and the teacher made me march out with just a towel on, I have never gone without a plan on how to get out no matter what - with clothes on!

Re: Where to start
My advice is to take stock of what is already in the cupboard and start picking up extras. Keep doing this until you have 3 months (minimum) of food supplies. Then look at water...is there city water, which could go out? then pick up water (not the water that comes in milk type jugs). Then think abo...

do a search on them NFA. It used to fairly easy to get parts for them. If I can ask, how much are the put together ones going for?

Re: Food storage
I don't know what size garden you have, but a garden for storage seems to me that you should can much of it. A root cellar won't do you much good for long with tomatoes, peppers and such. Canning doesn't distort the taste, but drying can a bit. I use a variety of methods to preserve my harvest. Free...

I thought it was a fair article. I hope the press keeps posting stuff like that until the government think we are hiding behind every tree and shrub! Maybe they will finally get scared and run...naw, we couldn't be that lucky!

Re: generator
We have a generator, some years we have used it a lot, others not at all. However, I have to say that it has paid for itself in the savings from lost food and having to go to a hotel. Although our situation is different now (no needing to go to a hotel), we recently lost over $500+ in food during th...

Canned product should be in a somewhat stable temperature. I've used closets, put things under the beds and even covered boxes with table cloths and used them as side tables in the living room.

Re: Trying to start a garden!
Make sure that your chicken manure is aged a bit or it could burn the plants...not much of a problem if you dig it in well and use seeds. When you plan a garden, I've always found that it is most useful to decide exactly what you want out of it. With good planting and the length of your season there...

A lone person, or even a small group fighting the government with guns is not only useless, but stupid. I do not think that Obama will get shot, but then no one thought that about Kennedy. He didn't get shot because he was Catholic, so Obama won't get shot because he is black, and if something awful...
