Re: Civil Unrest In Middle Eastern Arab States

Egypt baffles me: how did Morsi not realise this would go down like a cup of cold sick? Syria's mostly back online. And the rebels, it turns out, were so used to it that they'd got hold of a load of satellite gear to keep in communication: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/01/world/middleeast/syrian-re...

Re: Flooding in the UK

I managed to dodge the worst flooding by being upcountry, but locally the main road flooded out three times (once with every rain pulse), the Exeter flood defence was running at maximum, there were lots of landslips, the Great Western canal fell out of its levee, and a lot of rail line damage from w...

Re: Civil Unrest In Middle Eastern Arab States

Syria dropped off the internet the other day. International voices were immediately worried that they were going dark to crack down on dissent, level some suburbs, all that stuff: the regime equivalent of drawing the curtains before beating your wife. In response, the Syrian Minister of Information ...

Elections coming up.

It will be interesting to see how the recently Sprung Arabs respond. The Egyptians are a bit of a wild card right now.

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

That trailer park looks a lot more comfortable than those containers. Either those container shelters are lacking insulation, or the design is over-simplified. A cold metal box in UberStorm Apocalypto? I'd rather bug out to where there's power. Actually it reminds me of a really big metal (very Amer...

Ash Dieback

Ash dieback is a nasty-looking tree disease that could be as bad as the old Dutch Elm infection of legend. Good news for outdoorsy types - you lot - you can help, with the Ashtag app. It's got a spotters' guide for symptoms and you just fire of geotagged photos if you find anything manky. The info i...

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

I used Bronner's as my one-bottle-does-everything body-clothes-dishes-and-bicycle soap for a three week bike camping tour. It's okay. All handwashing is a bit crappy unless you're practiced at it. Everyone ready for the nor-easter? The surges will be crappy (yay weak tides!) but it doesn't look comf...

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

Took me a while but I suspect this one is faked as well. Don't know about you, but DC has been overcast most of this week. A night shot of the eastern half of the US and nary a cloud? These types of shots are usually composites shot over multiple satellite passes. I smell a rat. It's super fake. It...

Just to add a fillip of urgency to the whole "get the power back on" situation, there's a Nor'easter forecast for Wednesday. Yeesh.

Bastardi might be a good weatherman but that's not the same as a climatologist (his sea ice predictions for example). I wouldn't base any seafront property investments on his predictions.

Re: Prometheus

Deep themes? Only in the style of Lost (same guy): throw a lot of deep-flavoured buzzwords at the screen and never give any answers, just spam and tease. It's only deep if you're a teen stoner. The deep theme I was most interested in was Weyland's motivation -- he makes a bot that's the dead spit of...

Hydrant excursions are only fun in retro movies. :(

Doc Jeff Masters has a bit on the science of why Sandy took the course she did: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMa ... rynum=2283" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

NYT's damage-o-matic said that five big water treatment plants were offline: presumably power restoration will be targeted at essential infrastructure like this before the rest of the mess?

It's not even discovering nothing, it's confirming the Standard Model.

Oh, and for swallows, try obscure SF novel The Krone Experiment. Written by a physicist it's a fun detective story-cum-disaster.

Yeesh, so many crappy little electrically-started fires and so much power outage by trees. I'd pay the extra to bury my damn cables.

Re: Hurricane Sandy - the next "perfect storm"?

It's just not like England, where even the weather is polite. I see that Sandy's now tied with Igor for the biggest TS wind-field on record. The fast-wind core ain't much, but she's ludicrously big and very wet. And all the models show an intensification phase before landfall, because this is Hallow...

Re: Leon Panetta Warns of Cyber Peal Harbor

That's kinda my point in two places: boys and hype. The boxcutter boys were not a state, they were the Bond-villain of trolls; and the hype can make you spend a ton of money on defending against unrealistic threats. Also, Blacksmith, that "tons of ballistic missiles" photo is a famous, hilariously b...
