Re: Do gas masks have a legitimate purpose in your preps?

I think they have a place in preps, yes. That said, I'm not preparing to fight my way out of an area that's just been blanketed with soman or VX - if that happens I'm probably boned, and having a mask, at best, makes me a wee bit less boned than not having one. In case of something like lewisite or ...

Re: Ebola in West Africa

You're a possible carrier short-term. There is one documented case that I'm aware of, of a filovirus being transmitted sexually after recovery. That came from the initial Marburg outbreak in Marburg, Germany, where a survivor infected his wife with the virus. I'm not sure what the probability of tra...

Re: Ebola in West Africa

One big difference relative to HIV, though, is that HIV has a very long latent period during which you're infectious and can transmit it, but show few if any symptoms. The long persistence of Ebola (and Marburg, too, should that ever turn up in a large-scale outbreak again) is a hazard, but a more m...

I can find it sporadically around here. Prices are normal, but supply is very thin indeed. I can find .22 Magnum again, though, at only mildly inflated prices.

Re: Entry level bolt rifle?

I'd second the recommendation for a Savage, and also for .308 vice .223. It has more range and power, is larger than 6mm which matters in some states for hunting, and is also common and not an unreasonable caliber for a semi-auto rifle if desired later (though if you have a 5.56 rifle now, there's n...

I'll be keeping an eye on this phenomenon, and this thread. I noticed something similar this weekend, and also noticed an awful lot of people getting gas - like, lines at just about every pump. Don't remember specific examples, but I'll be keeping an eye out.

Re: 30K Year Old Virus Resurrected-unseen threat???

I will point out that of the myriads of known viruses, very very few even have the capability, in the worst case, to destroy an entire species. When scientists talk about the risk from something like this being low, they mean "odds are so long as to be effectively impossible". Is it something to kee...

Re: Premium 7.62x39: PDX1 vs SST vs Zmax?

One thing I'm curious about, though, is that both the 7.62x39 and .308 PDX1 loads use a 120gr bullet. I'd sure hope they're not the *same* bullet. If so, accuracy is going to stink. Can't imagine Winchester would be that dumb, but... (Also, the .308 seems to be a dialed-down load - 2850FPS with a 12...

Re: Premium 7.62x39: PDX1 vs SST vs Zmax?

In 7.62x39, ZombieMax *IS* SST. It's just a different-colored tip. In 7.62x51, it's A-MAX. I think it's an A-MAX in 5.56 as well. If it's cheaper than plain SST, I'd get it, because AFAIK it's exactly the same beast.

Re: 10 round magazines

There is another possible use for socking away some 5 or 10 round mags - hunting. Some states don't let you hunt with a standard-capacity mag. I know VA doesn't care (although 5.56 is not kosher here, bah humbug), but other states often do. If I wanted to hunt with my FAL in NC, for example, I'd nee...

Re: Saiga 12.or Ruger 10/22

That's not a terrible option, though the pistol is likely to eat up most of that... Looking in my LGS's used case last week, the prices weren't great. Springfield XD .45 $480, CZ 75 $500, Glock 17 G4 $480, Glock 20 G3 $650, Sig P226 .357 $650, Walther PPK $400... Not much cheaper than new.

Re: Saiga 12.or Ruger 10/22

I vote for the Saiga. It's more practical than the Ruger as a defensive or hunting weapon, with the possible exception of small game - though even for that, you can use birdshot and be pretty effective. Also, the Ruger is easy enough to come by and is likely to remain so. The Saiga, as others have p...

Re: Shotguns, Birdshot and SHTF

I'd think birdshot is still useful for small game hunting and possibly for nuisance animal control (which, depending on the scenario and the nuisance animal, might amount to the same thing). Unless you already have a better small game gun, keeping a decent supply of birdshot for those purposes still...

Re: Mosin vs. Enfield vs. Mauser--which and why?

For me, I like the Enfield. Fast action, 10 round magazine, detachable magazine, and at least on the No 4 Mk 1, better sights than the Mosin or Mauser. Well, I think so anyway - don't care for the Mosin's sights a bit. Also doesn't kick as hard as the Mauser or Mosin, IMHO. Equally, the round isn't ...

Re: the Defensive Shotgun; How we make it work--MilCopp Blog

Yeah, I'm curious how the 00 shells pattern, too. I did test out the NML #1 nickel-plated buck shells (high velocity version, since the Saiga likes heavy loads better) in a Saiga (20" bbl, cylinder choke, IIRC) - consistently about a 5.5" pattern at 10 meters, which I'd call pretty good. Not nearly ...

Re: Shellfish allergy

I wonder - given that potential for cross-reactivity, is there any risk of allergy from bugs that get into stored food?

If so, it would be a very good idea to keep diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and famotidine (Pepcid), plus an Epi-Pen if you normally have one, in your emergency kits.

Re: the Defensive Shotgun; How we make it work--MilCopp Blog

I've found quite a few #2 (all magnum) and #1 buck loads for the 20ga. No Man's Land Ammo - http://www.custombuckshot.com/product.html - has some interesting loads, though they're not precisely cheap. That said, #3 is still what I see the most of. I have to hunt for the larger shot sizes.

Re: Purpose of the Semi Auto 308 Battle Rifle

I think, personally, that the OP is absolutely right in the general case - intermediate-caliber rifles do just as well at short to medium range, and are lighter and easier to control. Where I see their value is in sheer general-purpose versatility. If you're in a state where you can't hunt with a 5....

Re: Gun sales surge to record high in 2013; expect ammo spik

Partially that. Also, right after the Sandy Hook shootings, there was a giant rush to get guns that people thought were at risk of being banned, before any such ban could go into effect. Sorta "now or never" thinking. Without opening the politics can of worms, though, I'll say that a lot of folks I'...

Re: What do you grab?

I'd grab my pistol (which is next to the bed) and my phone. Enough light comes in the window from street lights and the moon that I can at least see if the door is open, so I'd glance at that and listen. If I think the sound came from inside but the door's still shut, then I have to decide between h...

Re: Hey Whats A Better Survival Rifle 30-06 or .308

Mosin Nagants are under $100 on sale. -Mb Slight derail, but where are you finding Mosins for under a hectobuck these days? I haven't seen a 91/30 for under $250 since before the Great Panic, and M44s are closer to $400. For that price I can get a No. 4 Mk I SMLE, which is a much nicer rifle. In fa...

Re: Hey Whats A Better Survival Rifle 30-06 or .308

In Illinois, I can say that the case for the .308 is less compelling than it might be in a state that allows rifle hunting and requires a .24 caliber or greater (like VA). I chose a FAL myself because of that very restriction - though I could just as well have chosen an AR in .300 BLK or an AK in 7....

Re: Hey Whats A Better Survival Rifle 30-06 or .308

<kersnippity> 30-06 is 7.62x57 .308 is 7.62x51 or you can look into a russian rifle that fires 7.62x54r ( you can get saiga/vepr rifles for around 800 and they will be like an ak action) Minor nitpick - .30-06 is 7.62x63. You're probably thinking of 7.92x57mm IS, AKA 8mm Mauser, which is a pretty n...

Re: Hey Whats A Better Survival Rifle 30-06 or .308

I vote for .308. It's easier to get, lighter, almost as powerful and there's a greater range of rifles available, especially if you want a semi-automatic. For anything where the extra 100-150fps from the .30-06 would matter, you'd be better off stepping up to a .300 Win Mag. I can't think of anythin...
