Re: Cast iron cleaning Cleaning in the field...how?

When I was a Boy Scout we used to finish the cobbler then cover the Dutch oven and leave it to burn on the fire for a while (an hour or more) then pop off the lid. There would usually be a little flame... That's all of the sugars and stuff burning off. Then, we would pull it off the fire and scrape ...

Re: 2014 Prepping Goals

Four big goals
1) I want to start saving for a farm (BOL).
2) I want to grow my first back-yard garden (2013 I tried my hand at growing flowers).
3) I want to double my ammo stores.
4) I want to get serious about food storage.

Re: Blankets--alternative to wool?

I've got a couple of summer weight rei travel sleeping bags that are synthetic fill. They pack down very small and are rated to 45 (I've slept out in the low 40's high 30's with a bivy). Alternatively, you could pair a fleece sleeping-bag liner with an emergency bivy for similar effect. Another, mor...

Re: Where can a person train?

You'll have to keep looking for a range that'll let you draw. Next step would be to do a ton of dry fire work at home (draw, trigger squeeze, mag changes, moving to cover... Ect). Then, look for a firearms class in your area. Look for basic hand gun/rifle course. Take one or two courses a year. Go t...

Hello from Northern Virginia. I've never made the drive down to ZS006 or ZS046 from the Metro-Area. I've seen the odd ZS bumper sticker around the beltway though. We are around.

Cheers!

^^^ Yeah, I've read some of those studies covered in running and other athletic magazines. I'm not a doctor, but I go see one some times. I've struggled with sports injures for several years now... Ankles, back, and elbow all give me problems (steps out of excuse box). But, over the past 2 years, I ...

Watched a promo video on YouTube... I was un impressed. I don't know how much this "class" costs but you might start with a little background reading before you plunk down a chunk of change on something you think is questionable (I assume you think this is questionable based on your question). I think you've got a great plan here. I always thought the "Earthship" approach was interesting. http://earthship.com/ They use recycled tires and rammed earth to form the walls. Just a thought, you might be able to incorporate this in to a less complicated structure than what this company sells. Ed...

Here are a couple of additional options that may look a tad more civilian and/or less conspicuous:

There are tons of options out there... Blackhawk! Makes a combo kit with everything you need for shoulder, drop leg, and Molle. To might have to spring for an additional holster as this kit is for an M9. Just one option though. http://www.blackhawk.com/product/Serpa-Combo-Kit,84,1416.htm Also see th...

Re: Lockdown situation as a substitute teacher

If the door opens out into the hallway, that makes it tough. Is there a way to use some kind of cord or cable to loop around the door handle and tie down to an anchor... Like a big desk or something inside the classroom. That way there would be some resistance if a shooter came and pulled on the doo...

You should see if you can try a couple out. Do you have a friend that would let you demo one?

On topic... I only have experience with the Aimpoint, both the pro and the micro. Both are outstanding optics. You will not be disappointed.

Op what's with the upside down pictures? It seems to have something to do with photos taken with my iPhone and edited on my pc in Lightroom. They seem to show up upside down on my iPad and rightsideup on my PCs. All I have to say is it is damn maddening to figure out. I'll stick with the point and ...

Sorry to dig this thread up... No fancy grinding, but I wanted to practice some rattle can techniques before I go after my carbine... here's the result of a weekend, lots of primer, some paint, and a $39 Eastwing axe. This one will be going into the Soobie's emergency kit. Eventually, maybe I'll get...

On your question about dying MARPAT... One cheap and less permanent option might be sewing patches on the outside of the pack. It'll break up the camoflage pattern if you throw on a big "peace sign" or some greaful dead bears along with some odd-fabric squares or leather here and there. It'd definit...

I'm thinking that the story aught to coincide with the winter holidays so your protagonist can be assaulted by zombie Santa with elves on a PAW supply run to a local mall.

Thats a good idea, but I think this is a case of irreconcilable differences. I want to go .308 and Gerty... she just doesn't swing that way. This is going in a bad direction...

Truth is, I want to try something new. Wait... thats not much better.

Assess the situation... Make a 30 second plan to get off the X, moving to cover with my EDC bag. Then, continue assessing, planning, and moving as appropriate until I have put maximum distance between me and the danger or until I reach safety.
