Re: Who of us volunteers, what do you do?

I collect non-perishable snacks, hygiene items, and fun stuff (cards, games, dvds, books, etc) for the soldiers deployed to the middle east and send a couple boxes a month. I've gotten some super nice "email pals" that way!

Re: Mostly a question for the ladies. Purse or backpack?

I carry a small purse with the essentials-wallet, keys, cell all the time. If I also want to carry more I put it inside a tote bag with wide straps. That way I can carry my tablet, a book and a water bottle comfortably. Just depends on my plans for the day.

Re: To everyone working tonight and tomorrow in EMS.......

Spent the last 3 midnight shifts working CT in a trauma center, surprisingly nothing really bad! A few drunks, a few elderly with tummy aches from all the good food, and a few psych patients. But the holidays always bring out the depressed.

Re: Which Ball Blue Book of Canning?

I have the Ball Book from 2010 and the recipes and instructions are great. My mom and aunts used to can anything that didn't get out of the kitchen fast enough, so I saw a lot, but never did more than jam myself until 2010. Since then I've canned chicken, spaghetti sauce with meat, peaches, ground b...

Cast iron dutch oven. Can be used on a stovetop burner, in an oven, or on a campfire. There are many cookbooks available too.

Re: Give up your addiction?

I have a really hard time giving up my diet coke. I have cut back from 4-5 of the 20oz bottles per day to 2 of the 16oz ones, but that's as good as it's going to get until the shtf or I croak, whichever comes first! Going without bread (carbs) is also hard. But I bought a grain mill and some wheat a...

Re: Trying to convince family the need for prepping

I tell family and friends who are doubtful that prepping is just another form of insurance. They have car ins, homeowners ins, health ins, etc don't they? The money spent on those policies gives peace of mind and so does prepping. It's not wasted, even if never used.

Re: How Have You Prepared Today? (Bug-in Location Edition)

I managed to can 5 qts of stew beef that I got on sale and 4 pts of peaches. These get added to the pantry along side the 14 pts of chicken I already have. Whenever I find meat or fresh fruit on sale I am doing this, as the prices just keep going higher and higher! We also did a canning demonstratio...

Try planting some raspberry bushes along your fence line. He won't be reaching thu those, you get yummy berries, and they are pretty cheap to buy. All round win. Also let him know, in a nice way when he's sober, that you have installed a CCTV set up.

Years ago, as a young bride of 5 months, my husband and I lived on a farm at the end of a dirt road with state forest on one side and a huge dairy farm on the other. An unexpectedcold front came thru with freezing rain and then snow. We were eating dinner when there was a knock and frantic shouting ...

We spent a week in London a few years ago and loved it! I have bad knees (arthritis) so I'm not a good walker either. We took the Big Red Bus tour our first morning and it was very helpful to see where everything was located and gave a good overview of the city. The tube system is great and the gate...

Re: Oklahoma City Tornado Relief Drive

FYI-OKC area was hit by a swarm of "small" tornados this afternoon. My son, David, lives there (he's fine) but they are still assessing the damages. Apparently several hit west of the city and followed I-40 due east skipping and hopping right thru the downtown areas. At least one also went southeast...

Re: Oklahoma City Tornado Relief Drive

Just did my part. I lived in Oklahoma for 20 years before moving to Chicago. I lived in Moore, Shawnee, and Edmond and still have many friends in the area. My son actually lived in Moore until April 1st when he moved closer to his job just west of the city. Talk about a lucky move! I know several pe...
