Travel to Aruba

I'm trying to put a kit together for my wife and I for a week long trip to Aruba. Since it is a trip to a foreign country, I am treating this a bit differently than some of our other trips. Kit will be very basic, but supplemented with snacks and basic food items when we arrive. I will say this firm...

Re: Help with programming issue, Yaesu VX-5r and CHIRP

There are a lot of variables in play here we would need more detail to help diagnos the issue. What version of CHIP and Mac OS are you using? Are you using a Yeasu cable or a generic third party? If you are not using a Yeasu cable what make and model cable are you using? It would appear it was a MA...

Help with programming issue, Yaesu VX-5r and CHIRP

Picked up a new to me used VX-5 and Chirp will download from the radio, but there is an error uploading that freezes CHIRP, and there is a receive error on the VX. I have done a hard reset on the HT, updated CHIRP, and researched the issue. It appears it might have something to do with MAC OS, but I...

Re: Thinking about a 30-30

If you need a 30 cal semi auto rifle, I'd suggest an AR in 7.62x39. I was surprised at how accurate mine was with Tula. You will get the occasional, i'm shooting crappy ammo flier, though. However, I like 30-30. I like the $11-$14 a box price for shelf ammo. It's super easy to reload and easy to du...

Thinking about a 30-30

It would be my "go anywhere" rifle. I have a 44 mag lever gun, but a 30-30 is a real rifle cartridge, and ammo is cheaper actually. Thoughts? Marlin or Mossberg?

Re: Help Me Pick a New 9mm

I'm strongly considering the 92fs as another full sized 9mm. Pre-bans magazines are available, which is a must for me. I have no immediate need, but it's a classic and could back up my 229 and my carry m&p9c.

It's a good carry gun, it works. It's not a gun I take to the range for fun.

Do you have rain barrels?

I recently purchased two, to try to water my back yard for grass without ticking off the landlord. Two small rain storms and 110+ gallons. I say plus because only one was installed for the first storm, and the second is set up as overflow. Not only can I water the grass, it's a good water reserve fo...

Re: What Did You Do Today To Prepare?

I've been using rechargeable batteries in my shortwave receiver for a few years now. I have a set of cheap AAA high lumen flashlights that I use in the back yard that suck up AAA batteries. I have fully bought in to rechargeable batteries, I bought my third set of Eneloop batteries, and now have two...

Load-Out Bags

I can also highly recommend the L.L. Bean boat and tote. When my wife and I travel, every little piece of spare gear goes in one. They are durable and going on 10+ years of use.

Re: Load-Out Bags

when it comes to duffles I lean more towards the "buy 'em cheap and stack 'em deep" philosophy, I keep a few empty ones near my closet to pack extra clothes in a hurry if need be. I have the classic North Face Base camp duffle, which is certainly a nice duffle make no mistake, but I would never pay...

Re: Yugo SKS

Hey Smash, did you get the rifle yet? Yes. Rifle was caked in heavy cosmoline - heaviest I have seen on a C&R so far. I was able to finally get some hot water on it, and flush most of the grease off of and out of the stock and metal. Rifle is what I would call good to very good condition. It may be...

Re: Non-DL holster thread was a bit of a bust...

Although I do carry concealed on the trail, it's the carry method that makes it the best option for actual distance backpacking. When you're distance hiking over hilly terrain, you don't want anything below your waist to interfere with your leg movement or anything to cause chaffing. We typically d...

Re: The Suburban Shotgun: Is it really needed?

I owned a shotgun before I owned an AR. Consequently I've trained with it longer, and in times where I could have grabbed the AR, I reached for the shotgun out of confidence in my ability to use it. Last year I purchased an inexpensive Maverick 88 18.5 inch 12ga. I put a Choate Folding Stock on it, ...

Re: Cleaning a blood caked gun

He should unload it, take it in the shower with him and give it a good rinse with warm water and mild soap. Warm water should break up caked on stuff. Whatever doesn't come off, break it down and give it a once over with Hoppes 9 or similar and then oil it. Should be fine.

Re: Bottom Drops out of AK-47 Market

Local buy sell firearms page here in WA certainally has not bottomed out. People are selling AKs with a couple boxes of Ammo for $900. But there are also people selling stock mosin's for $300+ That's just crazy, unless that's the list high but I'll accept market rate strategy. When I see Mosin Naga...

Re: Yugo SKS

Oh, Smash05. I don't know if you already planned on doing this any ways, but either look at it yourself or have a gunsmith look at the SKS before you buy if possible. Make sure some idiot didn't try to modify that SKS to accept AK magazines by drilling into the chamber, can cause the rifle to blow ...
