Re: Bring a bag lunch to Vanuatu

It seems like it was one of the worst storms to hit a Pacific nation (since records started being kept anyway). According to the media here, it had strengthened to a category 5 cyclone when it started hitting the islands in the chain. A lot of the islands are reported to be pretty much wrecked, and ...

Hope any ZSers in that area aren't stuck in lockdown, and are safe. Seems like we're living in interesting times lately.

Wonder what this ebola scare is going to do to the price and availability of PPE in that AO in the short term? :D

Not sure if this is news or not, but hadn't seen it posted yet. This story talks about a suspected second ebola case.

That rifle is drop-dead beautiful. Your father is a true craftsman.

Thanks for putting this thread together too, I've really enjoyed each post which gave me a feel for the complexity of the job and the incredible skill and patience that is required to build one of these.

Re: Ukraine unrest

I could well be wrong, but I was under the impression that the Ukrainian Parliament is made up of the same people as it was before the President fled? Elections are planned for May IIRC? If that is the case, presumably it is the same bunch of crooks and incompetents that Putin was happy (or at least...

Re: Ukraine unrest

Brecher has summarized his view of modern warfare as follows: 1.Most wars are asymmetrical / irregular. 2.In these wars, the guerrillas / irregulars / insurgents do NOT aim for military victory. 3.You can NOT defeat these groups by killing lots of their members. In fact, they want you to do that. 4...

snip "The common people pray for rain, health, and a summer that never ends. They don't care what games the high lords play." I agree, the author was blatantly hyperbolic and generally comes off as disillusioned and misanthropic. I can't disagree with him on either. Most people suck, the soundbites...

Re: most versatile rimfire rifle /

If you can find one, have a play with a marlin 795 or marlin model 60.

Both are semi-autos, both are stupidly accurate out of the box, and the 795 at least is cheaper (here in NZ anyway) than any good rifle has a right to be.

The takeaway from this whole thing for me is don't be wedded too much to a bug in plan. Be flexible and adapt your plan as circumstances dictate. Those who stayed until the last minute may not be able to get out. I've found that http://www.reddit.com/live/3rgnbke2rai6hen7ciytwcxadi/ to be a good sou...

Re: Press therapy - reloading room *chat*

Maybe a good place to start is to check what you mean by accurate? 2+ MOA accurate, just buy whatever components you can find, do the bare minimum of brass prep, pick your powder and go to town. 1 MOA accurate, match/known accurate projectiles (hornady fmjbt are surprisingly good btw), same minimal ...

Re: Large snowfalls, heavy rain and high winds across NZ.

Wellington is renowned for being windy, and we normally ignore gales, cyclones and tropical storms. This was a bit of an eye-opener. Returning home from work last night, the squalls were impressive, and that was just the weather warming up. The worst of the weather hit after dark, so it was hard to ...

Walk me through this. Finally gonna start rolling my own for precision. Have no interest in reloading bulk. My time ain't worth that nonsense. I want to load for 300 Whisper. Still figuring out the specifics of the load, but I have a couple ARs I can borrow to play around with before I figure out t...

Re: Press therapy - reloading room *chat*

Just ordered myself 1,000 69gr nosler hpbt projectiles to work into the stash. Anyone got any pet loads for this projectile for your AR? In terms of powder, I've currently got: H335 AR2206H (aka H4895) AR2208 (aka Varget) I'm aiming to use it both my AR's. The first a 14.5" carbine 1:7, the second, ...

Is a surplus molle ruck an option? When I was hunting for a BOB last, I got a large molle ruck with newest gen frame, all straps etc. for less than $80 US (not incl shipping). It is a big pack already, and the pals webbing means that mine also runs three sustainment pouches and a few SAW pouches and...

Re: Anyone choose a NON semi auto rifles for shtf?

I'll just ask the same question I always do. How does a 59" long bolt action rifle factor into your defensive firearms plan? I'm dying to know, as no one has articulated that to me yet. The only fit for a mosin I can see would be that it gives you the tallest grave marker in your 'hood when it turn...

Re: Anyone choose a NON semi auto rifles for shtf?

My first pick for a shtf rifle is one of my ARs. Having said that, if I had to grab a non-semi out of the safe to get me through teotawki it would be a lee-enfield, no question. My No5Mk1 would probably be my pick for a light, handy, shtf rifle that packs a punch with a good rate of fire. The iron s...

I've had the offer made for a bunch of legitimately obtained military surplus 7.62 nato mg ammo to be given to me for beer.
