Re: ThreatCon
The Patriot Act expires at the end of the month and the legislation re-authorizing it is getting held up, so I expect a 'major terrorist incident' sometime in the next 3 weeks.

Re: bare feet verse boots verse shoes verses sandles
I used to go barefoot a lot. Then I moved to Texas and discovered fire ants (the hard way). Fire ants love me (so do mosquitoes) and even though there would not be any mounds anywhere in sight, I couldn't walk 20 feet across the lawn without getting bit multiple times, so I learned pretty quickly no...

Re: What would you do if your house was squatted??
I could see this being a problem for folks who buy a bit of land in the backend of nowhere as a vacation home/BOL, especially if they don't spend a lot of time there. And if it some of the locals squatting there, it might be a lot tougher to get the local legal system to act promptly or even act at ...

So I wonder if a rocket-stove type configuration would work better? There are designs that use a large can/coffee can and a couple of smaller cans for the burn chamber and chimney. A bit more work build and improvising the insulator might be tough (maybe attic fiberglass insulation?)

Re: 5.56mm Green Tip M855 Could be banned
Over at the Officer Down Memorial Page , for so far in 2015, they list 3 deaths by gunfire (one of those was accidental, shot by another officer), 13 automobile related, 28 total. It seems like cars are a bigger threat to officer safety than guns. A lot of those deaths are the result of single vehic...

Re: "Walking Dead" Cable Series
I liked the episode, but I had to wonder about the Hollywood Handgrenade. Strong enough to impale Aiden on shelving, give Tara a traumatic brain injury but leave the others unscathed. They get those Hollywood hand grenades at the same store where they get the Hollywood silencers that barely make a ...

Re: "Walking Dead" Cable Series
I'm sure there is a Tv Tropes for this, but the somewhat cliched story line here would be Deanna would next try to separate Rick from the rest of the group by engineering a conflict where Rick, as town constable, would have to order someone exiled - most likely Daryl, since they've already establish...

Given that pretty much any .223/5.56 round is capable of defeating soft armor when fired from an AR pistol, their rational seems disingenuous at best.

Re: 12 Monkeys (SyFy series)
Nifty little time-travel plot twist in the most recent episode. The writing on this has been pretty good, probably my only compliant is that some of the foreshadowing & resolution could be a bit more nuanced. Minor nit (and this applies to some other post apocalyptic shows like Falling Skies). Civil...

I'd say I'm okay with season 2 so far. While it has all the usual plot device that lazy script writers resort to, it hasn't featured as much of the CDC doctor whose character I find so annoying - although every time he repeats the 'you must leave, you're in danger but I can't tell you why' I want to...

It could be worse. If it was on CBS, we probably get 'The Walking Dead:LA'.
Maybe it's just me, but if we're going to get a spin off, I'd like to see it set outside of the US.

12 Monkeys (SyFy series)
So far, so good. The few (too few) PAW scenes felt suitably apocalyptic. The time travel bits were okay. And I admit to having a weakness for any story that references the 'Plague of Justinian'.

That was a pretty good episode. I'm starting to like what they're doing with Murphy and I was surprised they killed a major character like that.
I read it somewhere, they had a rational for the fast vs slow zombies -- the longer they've been turned, the slower they are.

I was a little disappointed in the z'nado, I guess I wanted more scenes of it hovering up zeds and spitting them out over the countryside. I also didn't get the scenes with Addy and Murphy, but I guess they're actually trying to develop a story.

Okay, that is the headline in the paper: Seattle Times but they note "The flare is considered extreme on forecasters' scale, but just barely. Flares like this cause geomagnetic storms which can knock some power grids offline temporarily. They also can damage satellites and disrupt radio transmission...
