Help with the "Prepper" neighbor

Howdy Forum! Long time since my last post. I've got a scenario that I would love some input on. I have a big piece of land (30 acres), and only two neighbors in a half mile, one with 60 acres (who is a veteran like me, and a fantastic neighbor, always there to help). The other neighbor is new, howev...

Re: Help me with house planning

Interesting. I will have to pull the codes from the county then and find out.

Not planning to build the house myself (I wish I had that kind of time). I will probably have to shell out another couple of grand to have someone assemble it for me.

Help me with house planning

So, the wife and I found a large enough piece of land that we are putting in an offer. The idea was to build a nice log cabin on the land, and move into it within the next year or so. One thing I got to thinking about, being Florida, is the combo of termites and flooding. So, it was proposed by the ...

Tried out my rig this weekend, lessons learned.

Good Day fellow ZSers, I went camping this weekend and figured I would share some of my Go/No-Go recommendations for your BoB. My wife brought her gear along too, so we had both to choose from and here's what we learned. 1) Tomahawks are cool, but an axe is better. - I have the Cold Steel Trailhawk,...

River Monsters Rod/Reel Combo from Wal-Mart Review

So, the wife and I are picking up some ammunition for our shooting competition at Wally world and she spys a "River Monsters" rod and reel setup. She says "wouldn't this be great for the BoB?" (All smiles and cheers). I was needless to say, not convinced. Last night, we went fishing with this rod an...

Re: Whew... ruck marches, man...

According to the Army guide on load carriage, the only way to train for moving under load is to do it.

That said, I sympathize. I've done the 50lb (no armor), 5-mile humps and it's not like it ever gets more fun.

Re: Chickens and Chihuahuas

Interesting observations. Perhaps I'll just build a fenced-in area, because there is no way I want to risk my dogs getting into a scrap with the chickens. They are very well-behaved, not the bark or bite type, but I don't want to get a chicken that is... Glad to hear that Rhode Island Reds are fairl...

Chickens and Chihuahuas

So the wife and I have been looking into getting some chickens for our property. Interesting question the wife had: How will the chickens interact with the chihuahuas? Will they peck at them or leave them be? Our dogs are number one in our book, so if the chickens would be a problem, we would consid...

Re: Wild vegetable cache

Dandelions, now that sounds like a great way to appease my aesthetic sense while taking over the area behind my house! Conveniently, there are tons of pine trees nearby. Now I just need to get the onions and asparagus planted near the pond and I'll be well on my way to hitting the self-sufficiency m...

Re: Wild vegetable cache

That is all fantastic news/data.

I can't wait to grow some wild onions.

Now I'm officially a threadjacking jerk, but I wonder what other plants would grow in the same manner? Grass lookalikes with edible roots or other parts.

Re: Wild vegetable cache

This is a great topic, I have been wanting to do the same thing in my AO. Assuming you could grow wild onions, will they survive a cutting, like if you cut grass? My house backs up to an area that the state cuts once a month. I was thinking about planting some there in lieu of grass, but I was wonde...

Re: Bolas as a Z-day weapon?

I was thinking for more of a high neck throw (obviously requiring some training). I mean, if you went low, you still get them tied up. If you go too high... you probably should have practiced more. I guess I'd really like to see what these would do to a watermelon or something. To see if they would ...

Bolas as a Z-day weapon?

So I've been looking into smaller alternative weapons, particularly the type that would not attract a big amount of attention. I looked at bolas, and was wondering, could you make a Bola effective for zombie killing? I know they were originally intended to tangle up an animal's legs, but what if you...

Quite a few solid ideas there.

Guess I'm going to start looking for cacheing locations to put a few of those.

Those reels look pretty nice too. Those are probably my solution for a BOB fishing kit.

Cast Net for BOB

Howdy all. The wife and I were talking about fishing gear for the BOB and she brought up a good point: Me: I really want to get lightweight fishing poles, but I can't find anything that seems durable and compact. Wife: I can catch tons of fish, and bait for big fish with a cast net. I would rather c...

Furniture to the doorways. Grabbing the food stash and the weaps and tossing them up to the attic bug-in room. I'm sitting this one out for a few months. If society can't get it under control, I'll worry about bugging out. Also, good thing I bought all of that ammo, it will be mighty fun to have tar...

Re: Zombies and water.

Alright, assuming this was the type of zombie infection where animals didn't want to eat the flesh of the walking dead (and I'm talking little guys like chiggers, leeches, and other little guys), there would still be a host of bacteria that would be working to break down the soft tissue. Take a piec...

Looks like my current house is good, however, my new house will be vaporized. Good selling point for my old house? "Hey Mr. and Mrs. Buyer, you can sleep soundly knowing that a major nuclear strike won't even affect this area, because the population is too small!"

So I just finished building this: http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/l566/drifts14x/Snapbucket/4063BBB9-orig.jpg It was kind of a mash-up between what I wanted and what the wife wanted for an AR.
