My guess us Juice's area got attacked and that car was chasing the squirter (Juice). That allows for a few more minor skirmishes before the inevitable conflict.

Wow. I'm finally caught up after almost three days of reading. Amazing story, I don't know how I've missed it for so long. I feel like the murder of Carol and subsequent passing of food control to Johns were significant departures from the established characters behavior patterns has sort of changed...
