Re: Close Quarters- midrange weaponry

If you throw a knife... Then it's gone. In my book that's a bad use of weaponry. I throw knives for fun and sport. Let me just say that relying on thrown knives as a sort of standard weaponry item would be... inadvisable. As has been said, a good slingshot, a bow or (my personal favorite) a carbine...

Re: Living on food storage

Doer why would you possibly want to live off that food "for a year from a dugout shelter with no smoke or fire"?? I have to tell you if your conditions are that bad youre dead. Period. You're never dead until you're dead. Period. Survival may not live up to the standards of living you hope for, but...

Re: Too much like work...

Hopefully the chickens will take care of the bugs so we dont have to use anything. We're gonna free range them and introduce them to the garden. The only pesticides my grandmother normally uses is seven dust. Not sure on its toxicity on live stock but if we have to use any probably best to close of...

Re: new sword not finished yet

I generally temper in a home oven. Since my current oven is a no-good piece of shit, I generally bury the blade in a pan of sandbox sand for more thermal control. That being said, I haven't ever tried to temper a sword-length blade in this particular oven. You could do it with a propane torch, but y...

Re: new sword not finished yet

I'll make one disagreement with Fixxxer about the tempering color: you probably don't want that blue all the way across, but on the spine should be fine as long as the edge stays straw. You'd need to differentially temper to do that, though, which you can't do in a barbecue grill. We're in agreemen...

Re: new sword not finished yet

It looks much better than my first sword. Regarding heat treating, I'd be concerned about only doing the quench in small sections, but since you're using A36, it's a non-issue (quenching won't make steel with that little carbon noticeably harder). A note for the future, though... It might just be th...

I kept a fish bowl near the door for years. Last month I dumped it into a coinstar and got just over $100 out of it. Out of sight, out of mind, but it does add up.

Re: new sword not finished yet

Awsome thanks I like the ideas behind the homeade forges. I still live with my parents and there isn't much room around the shop for a forge so for now ill just keep with the stock removal method. Once I get my own place or maybe my friend would want to set it up at his apartment ill work on actual...

Re: Sword Blade Question

You can layer the consecrated iron, what is it?, as long as it is ferrous with other metal. What is its carbon content? If it is around 80% carbon or higher, you could use stock removal on a blank. If it's iron, it should have a carbon content of 0%. Iron with carbon in it is steel. Wrought iron is...

Re: new sword not finished yet

You need a forge to work with leaf springs, if only to heat them up and pound them flat (i.e. take the bow shape out of them). I assumed he had a method of heating if he's going to be heat=treating the edge. If not a forge, then an A/O torch setup or something. I belive that leaf spring material is...

Re: new sword not finished yet

yes it is 1/4. im all the hollow ground type of blades they do cut way better but im not sure how to do that. any tips? It doesn't really require hollow grinding and in fact, I wouldn't really recommend hollow grinding a blade meant to be used as a chopper like that. Just keep your flat-ground meth...

Re: new sword not finished yet

How wide is the spine of the blade? 1/4 inch? It looks good, but if I can offer one piece of advice? I'd consider running the bevel of your edge a full 1/3 of the way up the profile of the blade. That will offer a less-blunt point of impact without really weakening the edge, resulting in deeper cuts...

Seems a bit more honest than the false hope offered by a scenarios where the op gives you seventeen guns with unlimited ammo, but no food, water or shelter.
