Re: Unusual Item(s) In Your BOB

A full flask, you bring your comfort item, I'll bring mine! I instead have a pint plastic vodka bottle refilled with pure grain alcohol which weighs roughly half as much as the equivalent in liquor. It burns great in my soda can stove (which weighs next to nothing including the aluminum foil windsc...

Re: putting together a Vehicle Accident Kit

I´d really like to have a fire extinguisher in my car, there just is no place for it. By whatever means necessary, FIND a place, please. I've used mine to put out two engine compartment fires, and one to finish extinguish a kitchen fire in my home (I used up the kitchen extinguisher but had some fi...

Re: How do you increase your situational awareness?

1) Care about it and practice . This can't be repeated too often, and it's where I fall down as I don't have a ready opportunity to do so. That's my fault, as I could make my own opportunities more often than I do. When I was a student in one of Masaaki Hatsumi's US dojos we often did a drill where...

Re: Everyday carry Topic?

I'm trying to get more engaged in this forum now that it's feeling a bit "homier", so I'll chip it. I carry a Kershaw Speedsafe clip-on knife that's a single-edge and completely legal here. It's an assisted opener (index finger) because thanks to an aggressive form of arthritis the thumb-stud knives...

If it is just for decorative purposes, just pull some or all of the inner strands out of it, that will soften it a lot.

Re: Prepper armor

I belong to the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and although because of an aggressive type of arthritis I can no longer fight, I did for years. It's full contact with roughly 4# and up sticks (real swords are meant to kill people wearing armour) with somewhat controlled levels of force, and a...

Bear with me, I'm fairly new although I've been lurking a while ... Kreiger, as far as the red "stealth" pack - my pack is similar and the same color. I was a technical rock climbing instructor for a while, and I like what we call a "rock sack" which is a frameless pack with a padded back that cinch...

Re: 380 belly guns

I have an old, heavy russian makarov. Insanely reliable gun, but waaay too heavy to want to carry around. Not only insanely reliable, but insanely accurate, too. The 9x18 cartridge shoots "flatter" than I expected, as well. But, it is pretty heavy and although the barrel is short enough for appendi...

Re: First Handgun recommendations

If I were to pick out a rig on a college student's budget, I'd look for a reliable fullsize single stack* auto, lightly used if possible, for which I can get inexpensive ammo. Buy a Remora or similar holster for it, and call it good. I loved my old S&W Model 39, it was reliable and surprisingly accu...

That was my first 1911, too. Don't forget to slap a stiffer recoil spring into it if you're going to shoot full-powered loads, and it'll do you right.

Re: .357 SIG vs. .40 S&W vs. .357 magnum

Shit, good point. I'm not sure what it was then. Maybe it was the gas created being able to escape the case better. Shit, I'm all confused now. Makes more sense. I think that's more important in short-barreled handguns, but powder performance/selection is probably a more important factor in getting...

Re: Holster question

My all time favorite was a lined Tom Threepersons crossdraw from El Paso Saddlery. I wore it on a 2" wide heavy belt (not a purpose-built "gun built") just below my pants belt, a little lower on the gun side. With a wide single-thickness belt the heat and sweat will cause it to curve to fit well. I ...

I'll go along with Miyamoto Mushashi who said "A warrior should not have a favorite weapon". He did not, however, say that you should carry or use a weapon with which you are not proficient.

Wear/carry what you want, but practice with it before you need it.

Or the cool thing is cheap, like a Makarov/CZ52/P64 that shoots cheap-ass 9x18. I love my Makarov and carry it a lot in hot weather, I think it's one of the most often underestimated defensive pistols out there. It's not all that far behind the 9mm in power, and mine is probably the most accurate f...

No luck at any of the three, but thanks for trying to help. Numrich has the mags listed but sold out, also all the parts to build a mag (it's simple) are sold out. I never figured out why they dropped these neat little pistols in favor of the double action. I had the AMT .380 single action, a Bauer ...

Nope, wish I did as I'd like to get a spare mag for mine, it's a fine little pistol - reliable, and if you can see the tiny sights it's surprisingly accurate. I already have the spur magazine baseplate, but can't find a magazine.

I lived within ten minutes from them from 1999-2006, and the only ammo I can remember buying from any other company was some discounted plinking .22LRs from either K-Mart or Walmart, don't remember which. Widener's hires good, knowledgeable folks, and while they often don't have time to chit-chat mu...

Color me skeptical. Perhaps that story has been exaggerated over time. I really doubt it. Bobby wouldn't talk about it, but I talked to both his brothers separately. If it was exaggerated it was carefully planned, because they agreed on detail. Yes, he did reload twice and shot dry three times, he ...

Here in the SW corner of Virginia it usually is in the mid to high 70's in summer, occasionally going over 80 a little. For that I wear jeans or cargos, a tucked t-shirt and an open front long-sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up a turn or two, and a ball cap. This year it's consistently mid-to-h...

I'd love to see someone release a 9mm or .40 S&W copy of the Colt 1903-08 Pocket Hammerless, updated with modern steel and designed internally to handle the stouter pressures. I got to handle one once, and that is one neat little package while still being large enough to shoot comfortably.

Thanks for saying that. The mess that the colorado theater shooting thread became ended with a few people, some of whom I really respect, saying they routinely ignore the posted no weapons signs and carry in such places, because "It's not illegal." I understand where they're coming from, and IANAL,...

Re: Seven tips for summer carry

Sometimes, you have to modify a holster to fit your own needs and carry style. I bought the crossbreed quick clip from DannusMaximus and then took a pair of scisors to it, drilled new holes, and basically modified it for me, and me alone. Don't be afraid or timid worrying about resale value! ...ima...
