Skip the steel! Get one of those awesome genetically engineered goats! That make a new goo like spider silk! Then harvest, spin, and weave! Voila!

Re: Down and Dirty No Frills(DDNF) Urban SHTF Preps

How about the solar/dynamo combo? Does anyone know if the external device can be powered by both or is it dynamo only? Any recommendations?

Re: Field Tablet

Any thoughts on the Kindle? Base model is lightweight and compact. Battery is spec'd to last a month without needing a charge. Sounds like a solid bet to include in a BOB. Field manuals and technical reference galore at your fingertips in a PAW scenario could be invaluable. Besides, who wants to car...

Re: Down and Dirty No Frills(DDNF) Urban SHTF Preps

I've seen a few dynamo powered flashlights and radios that also come with a USB type attachment to charge portable devices... Does anyone have one of these and can vouch for how effective they are? My digital documents on all sorts of topics are great and printing them out is rather unfeasible but a...

Re: Down and Dirty No Frills(DDNF) Urban SHTF Preps

Dude. You have a tank full of 1000 gallons of diesel?! Is that personal or business? Sheesh. How about some of those survival calorie bars? Something like 3000 calories in one... Google mayday food bars. I agree with the hand crank radio and the iPod, but you may want a portable solar charger for th...

Re: Companion Planting

That's kind of neat, but I wonder how a genetically modified plant holds up? Do you think a GMO will keep their natural resistances and repellent properties? You wouldn't happen to know a reputable place online to purchase some seeds that haven't been modified and are as nature intended, would you? ...

WIN! That movie was good but the exchanges between Will Farrel's character and her really made it worth it! HA!

And yeah, she's a real battle axe... She's staring murder at me right now.

Re: Ultralight Camp Pot from Heineken 24oz "Keg Can"

Very cool. I like the idea of it being so compact like a russian doll, but I'm afraid that the fuel wouldn't be feasible for any longer than a week as stated, especially with a family. I'll probably build one of these and investigate alternative heat sources. Thanks for sharing!

Re: Advice for a first-time homebuyer

Timing is everything they say... It's interesting you should ask about purchasing a home, as I've just recently committed myself to being more active in something and that happens to be ZS at the moment. Even more interesting that my wife happens to be very well versed to the ins and outs of finance...

Re: Mod My House! Home Security for new home owner

I would recommend against wireless video cameras. Most are easily intercepted and unencrypted. If a would-be thief is wardriving around looking for wireless cameras, he can see which houses are worth breaking into, and he can also find the blind spots. Honestly? I was not aware that your run-o-the-...

Re-introduction+!

Hey folks. I've been a member since... 2006 it seems. Huh. Who'd have thunk it? I've never been quite active, every now and then I rear my ugly head and put my foot in my mouth. Just renewed my membership today. So, hello! Again! I recently acquired a family and it turns out my lovely new pet drago....

Re: Navy Guys Please Read

Before you worry about any of this, worry about if your recruiter is trying to screw you. Don't settle for anything less then a few thousand as an enlistment bonus, plus the Navy College Fund. Yes, you can indeed have both. If they want you bad enough, which he will because he has a quota to fill, t...
