Re: Stuff to know about long distance walking

I did a trail run/walk this past September that was just shy of 26 miles with a vertical gain of somewhere around 4000 ft (I think, that's what they claim but hell if I know if that's accurate). Anyway, I wore the lightest running stuff that I've got which is some kind of mesh-like spam t-shirt, mes...

Re: looking for just a day pack

I usually either take my Camelbak M.U.L.E. or Condor Mission Pack on day trips.

Re: Pathfinder Trade Knife

Definatley not a bad overall knife. The only two issues I had was the sheath (multiple design flaws) and the fact it just didn't come very sharp at all.

But all that will be easily fixed. I'm going to make a kydex sheath for it and give it a nice edge.

I've got my old Razor and a quick charger that takes AA's just for the 911 capability...although I keep it in my GHB in my truck most of the time.

Re: Looking for a good solid fixed blade knife

You can't go wrong with a Ka-Bar.

The Gerber LMF II would also be a great choice although I've found the blade is just a bit short for my camp tasks (wood splitting, chopping, etc...), still an excellent knife choice.

Hindsight really is 20/20 isn't it? At least she A) owns a firearm B) knew how to use it. I bought my wife a .38 a few years ago with every intention of teaching her how to shoot...that has yet to happen & it bothers me, especially since I work at night 6 months out of the year and is home by hersel...

Wow, you have yourself a heck of a start in concept but IMO, it'll never work. Too much food...5lbs of rice? 3 MRE's, Granola bars, maybe get a mountain house meal or two.

First thing you should do is read the first five thread topics on this page, top to bottom. Then give us a few more details on what your thoughts, intentions, needs, and budget will be. That might help in getting you some specific suggestions. Just asking, "What should I get?" with no other details ...

I guess it depends on how much crap you have to lug. You said you've actually USED them for camping or you PLAN to use one for camping? I own the Phantom. It's great, but like someone already mentioned, no place to store a sleep system or warm clothing. Plus, I think a little more thought could have...

I say assemble the exact same kit for much less...minus the BG pouch.

...and I can tell you for a fact that little Gerber multi-tool is junk, or at least mine was. It broke within a month of normal use.

My future wife's aunts and uncles were impressed that I could start a fire with just firesteel and a knife.

So now I'm known simply as "Bear Grylls".
