Re: Non Licensed training

Around here, if you want to take the FA/CPR basic class but don't care about getting the card, the local fire department will let you sit in on the classes for free (the $30 is just for the card), if you let them know in advance and they have the space. I'm also in WA state, and the above samaritan ...

Re: Does anyone here practice Charcuterie?

Fun stuff! I love love love making confit. Though to be honest, I haven't done it in years because it's just so expensive. (I've only done mostly duck, but also did goose one year. I have a local friend who's really into though. I'll have to ask him where he gets his recipes! My kids have been on a ...

Re: Suggestions

Over the years, while I do stock "nice to have" and disposable things for convenience, I've found myself more day to day reliant on alternative/sustainable items, so that the convenience stuff is something that's a nice to have thing rather than OMG what would I do without it. For example, for menst...

Re: General Fitness Discussion thread

DS, it's been awhile since you posted about your biking problem, but it really common when people are ramping up their bike time. Women aren't immune either. There are two issues that come to mind--it may be worth getting better bike pants/shorts (with padding)..but it may also be a chafing issue or...

Re: Helpful certifications/training?

I've mostly been absent from ZS this year because I've been in school full time; but I have to say that going for my massage therapy license (I am less than 2 weeks away from sitting for my state licensing exam!!!) has been one of the best things I've done from an 'advanced applications' of survival...

Re: Do You Keep Scrap Clothing?

No. I used to, but I've done a big purge. We have so much clothing as is, what I was saving for use "someday" frankly was a huge bunch of clutter/garbage that created more storage headaches/stress than it was ultimately worth to me. We still have too much clothing that *fits*, towels, sheets, ect. I...

Re: Workout of the Day

4 mi run today, I've been using the couch to 10k plan for now. Set a new goal for myself: I want to do the Rock-n-Roll Half Marathon this coming June, and hope to run a couple of 10k events inbetween then. I know that's a far off goal, but to be honest I have to be working towards something for me t...

I hear where you're coming from and I've done that in the past. I was trying to make a point with her, otherwise I'm just enabling her. I would love to hear her call me up and say, babe the flashlight I got sucks can you get a new one. In a way I'm looking for her to ID the need and at least attemp...

how many calories do you eat a day

Many obese people (that are mobile) actually do have a surprising amount of muscle from just the daily moving around bit. They have to. I gave two massages this week, one to an obese person and one to a skinny-side-of-normal person. Neither exercises regularly. I was shocked at how much more develop...

I don't know whether to  or cry, but I do know that I'm going to lock this thread for moderator review. Too tired to deal with it right now. I suggest that people chill. I get how hard it is to stop arguing with Wrong People on the Internet, but FFS. Hopefully some of this can be salvaged later.

Re: Workout of the Day

Back exercising after injury/medical crap absence. Yesterday: 11 miles on the bike, easy relaxed pace with a friend, 20 minute coffeeshop break at the halfway point. Today: 2 10 minute intervals of non stop running, with a 3 min cooldown inbetween. Tired, maybe pushing it a bit, but I felt so crappy...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

Yes, I don't understand the necessity of a particular shot either. I get that a head shot would drop someone, but just as there are always going to be people who totally freak out in an extreme flee reaction (Jor-El's Dad of the Year guy, for example), it's not like there would not also be people wi...

Re: Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

I am sorry, but that is a crock of shit. A head shot is not easy peesy at 25 yards with a handgun in optimal conditions.. Much less a sold out movie theater where there will be 200 people pushing and shoving to get past you, it's dark, it's smoky, it's FUCKING CHAOTIC! A head shot at 25 yards under...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

The odds of you surviving a public mass shooting are overwhelmingly... in your favor . Forgive me but that's the biggest bunch of meaningless bullplop people love to spill out after these things. It's about control. Yeah, well, there's an even bigger bunch of meaningless bullshit right there. It is...

Re: Aurora Colorado Movie Theatre Massacre during movie.

You know what I don't get about these conversations is the constant use of the idea that you're automatically going to die, or that facing an armed person in a mass shooting situation means you face insurmountable odds to your survival. That is absolutely ridiculous. The odds are in your favor, no m...

I hear ya, TA. Found out I have to rest my knee longer than anticipated, so I had to call my original tri and sign up for a later one. Re: I Forgot to Prep... Tampons

There are tons and tons and tons of places, GG. If you do a google search on "cloth menstrual pads" you find a plethora of options. It depends on what you want. I used to like ones that snap around undies (like the "wings" of certain disposable pads) but now I don't care about that. I give the same ...

Re: I Forgot to Prep... Tampons

I use reusable pads--had to for many years (and still have to be careful) because I started getting a allergic reaction to adhesives and probably the gel beads in disposable pads. Not at all a fun thing to have happen post cesarean. I started blistering everywhere there was any kind of contact--so.....

Re: Families with Autistic Children--What advice would you g

Popping in to remind folks that this is *not* an appropriate place to debate whether or not to cure autism. If you think you can do that without veering into politics, then perhaps a better subforum might be Off Topic. This thread should focus on preparation strategies for people who have autism, or...
