Re: Need thoughts on Kifaru Pointman!

An Osprey Kestrel 48 is $143 on Amazon right now. Similar size, MUCH lighter, and similar load range (50lbs is about all you would want to carry in either). I got a Kestrel 38 to replace my Express and am very pleased with it. Osprey has a pretty solid guarantee also, if you ever manage to damage it...

Re: Need thoughts on Kifaru Pointman!

Too big to be a good EDC pack, too small to be a good BOB, unless you live in a warm environment. Suspension on the Gen1 will be comfy to 50-60lbs if you adjust it right. 3 day travel bag that doesn't need to carry a shelter or sleeping bag? Great pack, but then so are LOTS of others from Osprey/Arc...

Re: Winter Sleeping Bag Help

Might as well resurrect this one, its zombie squad after all. The insulation in a Wiggys bag is continuous filament polyester. I've been told by people very familiar with Climashield, who were also familiar with Wiggy's, that its basically the same thing, but Wiggy's laminates the ends to the...

Re: Ditch Kifaru EMR for a Pointman? Same weight in both?

Trust me, a Pointman will NOT haul like an EMR will. I've had a Pointman, I now have an MMR for big loads. I also have an Express for the smaller loads.

If you want a pack that will haul a good load, but that is more Pointman sized, get a ZXR.

Re: BoB/Camping Stove

You are looking for a Dragonfly. It burns white gas, unleaded, kero, or diesel, it simmers, its awesome. Yes, its loud. I call mine the Hater Stove, 'cause my buddies that try miserably to cook anything in the winter with alcohol burners hate it. But its loud enough to drown out the hate. 8) I also ...

Re: Tell me about the Kifaru Long hunter guide/Also

Kifaru packs work extremely well if they are sized for the end user. OP, if I were you I would give Mel Terkla a call at 1-866-308-1911 (best phone number ever) and speak with him about fitting a pack to you properly. You can call Mel practically anytime, if he doesn't answer he will call you back d...

Re: ways to carry sleeping bags

Kifaru Pods work exceedingly well. I have all three sizes. You said you were bringing a military sleeping bag, so I assume you have the 2 piece MSS with the goretex bivy? If thats the case, you need a large pod. The problem with backpacking in winter is just what you have now discovered, that is the...

Re: My new (to me) Kifaru MMR as a 5 day BOB *PICS*

I agree on the ganglienss aspect. As to building out, I've reduced that a bit, and focused on keeping the heaviest items closest to to body. The rolly polys have msr fuel in one (which I don't want in my pack should the bottle compromise) and my wood gas stove in the other. Not much weight. The medi...

Re: Desert Daypack, suggestions wanted

I had an Xray. Neat pack, but no way would I buy one for full retail. There are a LOT of sub 2000ci packs that will do the same thing for less $$$, and I'm a total whore for Kifaru also. My small Kifaru (if you don't count the E&E and TG1) is a slick Express, and that is my recommendation for you. W...

Re: Winter Sleeping Bag Help

Despite what the above poster might say, I am thrilled with my Wiggy's bags. I have the Ultralight FTRSS, which is a 20deg core bag, 35deg overbag, and combined form a -20 system. I've used the individual components and the whole deal in the prescribed temp ranges and been very happy. I also recentl...

Re: My new (to me) Kifaru MMR as a 5 day BOB *PICS*

are you sure that is only 4200 ci? my ILBE is 4500 and I think that is a bit bigger, the current MMR is listed at 5200. really 65lbs isn't too bad for as big as it is, my advice is to ditch the tent (easy for me, I live in a fair-weather state) and get a bunch of freeze-dried food, I dropped severa...

Re: My new (to me) Kifaru MMR as a 5 day BOB *PICS*

Well, since the OP, I got my E&E on the pack, changed my food quite a bit, added some things and ditched others. In a couple of days I'm going to post a good breakdown thread with this pack, a G1 ZXR that one of my buddies is running this year, and an ILBE that another buddy has had for a couple of ...

Re: Making Sleeping Bags Warmer

Point of order, cold doesn't reflect. The space blanket layer facing up towards you helps a great deal in cutting down on the heat you lose to the ground however. I have a roll of reflectex cut to match the size of my ridgerest. These get placed in my bivy, reflectex first, then ridgerest, then air...

Re: How many Days do you Prep for in your Bob?

Right this minute I'm pretty well set up for 5 days, and that's 5 days of eating well in the dead of winter. If it were summer, I would ditch the -20 two piece FTRSS and grab my 40deg wiggy bag, throw more food in, and I could be out for a month.

Dude, I've got the hammer and nails ready. I've had a LOT of packs. Internal, external, civi, mil surp. Kifaru packs are the best I've owned. Best in terms of comfort, value (never pay retail ;)), durability, and modularity. You know, when you posted that you nearly froze your feet off in a Wiggy's ...

I don't have any links or pics unfortunately, but I know it works, as I used to have one ;) Now, I had the 1606. NOT the 1606AC. I don't know how well the MOLLE II components would work on the AC frame, but it seems like there are enough lashing points that it shouldn't be all that tough. I used to ...

Re: My new (to me) Kifaru MMR as a 5 day BOB *PICS*

 Regrettably, the pressure cooker doesn't fit. I think it weighs between 55 and 65 right now. I don't have any water in it, that will add about 5lbs. The G1 MMR is 4200ci. I've added about another 3000ish ci in pockets, between the small pod, two claymores, two 2qts, and the tailgunner. At the ...

1000ci isn't a bug out bag, its a day hike bag. At just under 2000ci, the MAP3500 is a pretty sweet pack. http://outdoor.amronintl.com/vendors/index.cfm?pageID=5056&vendorID=15" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; For winter camping/bugout, you'll need a pack with at least 4000ci. I do a LOT of pushups, but don't bench. I have that setup just for the pull down bar. I need to clean out all the mason jars, photo the damn thing, and sell it on Craigslist now that I have a decent pullup bar.

Five days in the dead of MO winter. With just a couple of extra tools, a replacement cartridge for the miniworks, etc.. it would be more of an INCH bag.
