A used model 10 S&W would a good one to start. I see them $300- $350 used at gun shows. I also picked up a Security Six for $300.

Personally I think its a mistake to prep with foods that require water to make them edible. Fresh water will be the first thing to become unavailable in disaster scenario. I bought a used Ruger Security Six at a gunshow from a private seller for only $350. 21/2 inch barrel stainless. Would make a great trail carry. I use it as a bedsider.

....just get a good surplus Mosin or Mauser. If the shtf, u prolly won't care about hunting regs and u will appreciate the reach out capability. Won't cost much !

A gonzo quick way to get started is go to Wal-mart, or where ever and get 30 large cans of soup or stew or whatever u like , 4 cases of bottled water , and a kerosene lantern with a gallon of fuel. And yes, I know that in order to take advantage of this, one needs more water than he would need without. But consider this: how much water could one really store up? Minimum required water intake is about 64 oz (1/2 gallon), and the recommended water intake can be as much as 3 liters (0.8 gallons)...
