Re: Five-year-old's new bugout bag

I do the same thing with my 6 yr old daughter. I am teaching her how to mark a trail to find her way back home this weekend. Our house backs up to 100s of acres of woods, so all I need to do is go out the back door.

What are "sticking plasters"?

Re: Handgun for my sister.

I just bought myself a Diamondback .380 with a laser sight. It's small and easily concealed. I would definitely take your sister with you to buy it. I set out dead sure I wanted the S&W Bodyguard, but when I held both and saw the different features I went with the Diamondback.

I would do the same thing that Idahobob does, can it up. I have two coleman propane stoves and two canners along with dozens of empty jars. If its short term, I would wait it out a day or two. Any longer and I would start canning.

I don't like that everything is smaller and close together. It makes it hard to read. Isn't there a way to subdivide the subjects but keep the old format?

Why would you paint the windows black? Why not just hang blackout curtains?

Re: Preventing a Break-In?

I have a little box called Fake TV, it's about the size of a Rubix Cube and uses no more energy than a plug in nightlight. You put it in a room facing a window and from the outside it looks like someone is home with the tv on. It has a setting to come on automatically at dark and shut off within a f...

A large area of the US will be impacted by this storm. I woke up this AM in NJ and my car is already covered in a layer of ice.

I keep a hard sided cooler in my car full of water bottles and juice boxes. They have never frozen. We have been through a blizzard and sub zero temps and they still have not frozen.

Re: Incoming - First Child

My kids never had jarred baby food. They can eat just about anything you eat (plain, not spicy) as long as you start out pureeing it, then adding little chunks as they get older. My other tip would be to start out on veggies, not fruits. I know most start out with fruits, but once your little bugger...

I got these tiny little canned hams, enough to feed two with no waste, only to find that- after buying a dozen of them, that they make Spam look tasty, and I HATE Spam! (insert Monty Python references here). So, before you buy by the case, for anyone just starting, buy one of each item and try it f...

Re: Bug Out Food Review: Bumble Bee Tuna Salad

I bought the chicken salad version at the dollar store and keep some in the car. My DH has taken them to work and he wasn't thrilled with them, but said they were edible and in an emergency situation he wouldn't hesitate to chow down on them.

I don't know the scientific reasons behind it. All I know is that I have a cooler full of water bottles and juice boxes that have not frozen. Its been in the high teens-low 20's here in NJ and there is not one ice crystal in any of the bottles.

Re: Learning from a minor problem

A lot of people don't keep water in their car during the winter because they will freeze and crack. I keep an insulated, hard sided cooler in my car with water bottles and juice boxes. Since they are in the cooler they do not freeze. They are mighty cold though :) Its been well below freezing here ...

I thought the legally changing your name after bugging out was pretty weird as that leaves a paper trail. I did think the IR LED lights on the hat was pretty neat though. I hope its a series, I liked the show.

I was wondering the same thing, it seems like such a waste. I was thinking of reusing one and just making sure the water is filtered through the Berkey before using for drinking/food prep.

Cholera is contagious. People think it can't happen here in the US but what happens if one of the aid workers or a family member visiting Haiti comes back to the US with it? Do you think there could be Cholera outbreaks in the US?

Re: WWYD if you wanted to loose 5 lbs a month and

Technically, you don't have to exercise at all. If you strip away all the fancy dieting tips, whether or not you gain or lose weight is calories in vs calories out. If you take in more calories than you need, the excess energy is stored as fat. If you take in less calories than you need, the needed...

Re: Canned ham recipes

We tried the canned ham straight from the can and it was gross. I cubed the ham and added it to split pea soup. I hit the soup with one of those bullet blenders to mash everything up and the soup came out very good.
