Re: 2.5 Gallon Plastic Water Bottle Collapse

I'm not picturing them, but if they're not built like the 5-gallon water cooler jugs they're probably not designed for long term storage (ie more than a month). I had a 10 litre jug that was constructed of the same sort of plastic as a milk jug that failed at the seams in less than 6 months.

Geez, don't open them. I'm a big fan of scientific exploration, but that's for the old can of peaches you find cleaning out your grandmother's pantry when she passes on, not for such neat conversation pieces as these.

My wife and I enjoy the show, except for the sophomoric dick-waving that continually goes on: "You're going down, ninja!" "Well you suck, pirate!"

Realistic? Not likely. Reasonable? Sure. In the end, their simulation turned up 519 to 481, which is less than 4% difference. Hardly a blowout.

Re: A simple system for food storage

On numbering systems: I would suggest an idiotproof (ha!) solution that isn't going to end up going to huge numbers and doesn't involve remembering to wrap around. YY-NN; The first two digits are the year you stored the item, and the following three are your 1-99 system. That way you restart on Janu...

One of my favorites, and my #1 "desert island" book is: The Art of Shen Ku by Zeek. This is a very informative book containing everything from sailing tips, to herbal and diet info, to basic martial arts, to travel tips, to medical info, and more. It's also wonderfully illustrated, and could be use...

Re: Doomsday and the availability of canning jars.

Yeah, you have to be careful with mayo and commercial spagetti sauce jars. One would think that the commercials would be even hardier, but for some reason they're not. The only time I have ever had jars explode in the canner is when I have tried 'just this once' to reuse a non home canning jar. :/ ...

Prolly beating a dead horse here, but having this is like having the "CRC Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae". It it a great book but you can only use it if you have an extensive knowledge of the subject. \ Propz for the CRC! I have a CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics; It was cheap on eB...

We had a big pile of snow out here about a week and a half ago, after a dry fall. More today and tomorrow, but nothing as hardcore as all that. Begin Hijack Oooooorrrrrr........ It could be a result of the "mini Ice Age" period that we are in the midst of (and have been for the past few years), that...

Also +1 on Crossfit, assuming you're already in shape and know how to do the activities properly. Crossfit is no place for a beginner unless they're in a class with a real trainer to make sure they use good form. If you're looking for an actual plan for beginners, the stronglifts 5x5 plan can't do y...

Re: Rumor + Panic = Nashville, TN out of gas.

I think the power of the rumor mill demonstrates that government and official organizations need to be on top of these things from the start, making a much greater effort for clear, concise, frequently updated, WIDELY DISSEMINATED information. People would have to trust the govt for that to work......

Also, chest freezer >>> fridge freezer. The door is on the top of the compartment rather than the side, so you're not spilling all your nice cold air all over the floor every time you go looking for a popsicle. To stay on topic, I learned I would rather deal with my climate than with weather that wa...

Re: What I learned from Ike

Btw, I would like some clarification: do you really save electricity by having water bottles in the freezer? A lot of people tell me that I'm wasting power with that setup (I too use it for power outage prepardness). If you get ice building up in the fridge, it looses a lot of energy, so why would ...

I realize the thread was referencing the House of Saud, but the tenor of your response certainly could apply to other actions cough*iraq*cough*afghanistan*cough. Not that those actions were inherently unjust (I'm not prepared to argue for that position that at all), but that the Iraq war is often co...

Sorry, but you didn't actually say anything about wiping out fanatics in your first post. Nowhere at all. Whatever you may have *meant*, that's not what you *said*. See, that's not what you said in the first place. What you said was Oh how I wish we could just nuke the major cities, capture the oil fields with ground forces, sieze the tankers with our navy, and somehow get away with it. Sadly, that isn't the world we live in. Which sounds a whole lot like "Conq...

The story over there is that the Georgian army attacked folks in South Ossetia, killed 2000 and then the Russians stepped in. That's been proven to be BS. The Russians are very adept at producing propaganda. I'm sure it is, but I doubt the spin Washington has put on this is the real story as well.

I talked to an Armenian friend of mine who has just returned from Armenia (which is just to the south of Georgia, btw).
