Re: Venison jerky question

Kyle's usually the one making the marinade. i know it involves Sriracha, garlic, worcesteshire (sp?) sauce, chili flakes, and sometimes soy sauce. I'll see if I can pin it down a bit more later today.

Re: Venison jerky question

We make venison jerky pretty regularly. It just gets marinaded like beef. Easy and tasty. The flavour is slightly stronger than beef, but we're good with that. The marinade we usually use is pretty intensely flavoured to start with, so the venison is a pretty good match.

Re: Turkey!!!!

This year we had a 25lb bird, so I tried something new for me because I wasn't sure it would fit in our oven properly. I butchered the bird (well, I had Kyle do that bit, since I apparently lack the brute strength to break a turkey's leg joint properly), and then roasted it in parts, taking each bit...

Re: Egg questions, from silly city boy

I agree with the bulk of information above. Uncooked (and unwashed) eggs are good for quite some time on the cool shelf. Cooked eggs have the protective coating removed, though, and only last a couple days or so (depending on the temperature).

What if she's following him cuz he's The Man as in, a total bad ass? I imagine, then, that he'd have background music every time he appeared. In that case, she (and anyone else) would naturally just realize his prowess. Sadly, this does not seem to be the case. (If you meet someone like that, let m...

Re: "Walking Dead" New Cable Series

She's an annoying character in the comic, but only because she's constantly questioning Rick (she appears to be a bit of a feminist?). -fenris- This comment confuses me. Are you trying to say she should blindly follow Rick because he's the man? Or that feminists ask too many damn questions? Because...

Re: Anyone interested in a mock bug out?

I just bring the tote I carry to work every day, since that's likely what I'll have with me should something happen. Every time I go, I learn a bit more about what I should have in there. I never have everything I need, and likely won't, but I'd rather prep with something I use constantly than a bag...

Re: Seaweed; excellent survival-in-the-wild food

I really like seaweed, even here in landlocked St Louis. It's so nutritious (and delicious!) that it's worth stocking up on if you like it. Because it's dried it takes up very little space so it is very portable, if that's a concern. I get mine at the local international grocer, so it's really inexp...

Re: DIY brick oven w/ pics

This is awesome. I've been vaguely thinking that someday I might want to have a wood-burning oven in the backyard--pizza, bread, roasts, yum! Seeing this on the ZS boards is a kick in the pants. Maybe this will be my project of choice next spring.

Just start posting in the 001 subforum and showing up at things. There's an open meeting on the third Sunday of every month at Shrewsbury Lanes where you can meet the folks that run the chapter and figure out how you can best help out.

This book is amazing! Calories are pretty much the currency in Bacigalupi's world, which I think is a pretty logical way for things to end up should something shitty happen to our food system. There's a follow-up, titled Shipbreaker , which is set in the same world but in a dfferent location (New Or...

My tomatoes usually end up with some liquid on the bottom and the tomatoes floating at the top; I've never had a problem with them. I think it just means that I don't pack them in as well as I could have, but I could be mistaken. Enjoy the peaches! I tucked one mint leaf into about half the pint jar...

Except for ants. Michelle had an ant infestation one year and I think she had to sleep in someone else's tent that night until we cleared them out. I assume it's because her hammock looks like a tasty hot dog. I can't blame them. I'm pretty sure it's just because I left the hammock's yoni open. And...

Re: Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace

I bought it years and years ago. Have tried to read it about four times. Keep getting a smidge further each time, but damn is that an annoying book. The completely disparate stories and bizarre (I want to say pompous) attitude are very off-putting to me. I don't know if I'll pick it up again.

I want to see more pics. My non-camera-having self has none to reminisce over. =(

O for god’s sake just cheat, where two badges. Have the as sold ZS badge then our own “badge” next to it. Just let’s not brag about it in case the “head shed” jumps on us. Um, the "head shed" can see this. Anyhoo, later this week the logo guidelines should go out, and I'm thinking they will ...
