Re: COVID-19 Thread

I'm not a doctor or a mathematician but at the risk of taking some stick, I'm going to drop this here. USA is now up to about 200 deaths. But how many people are infected? Maybe half a million! If the virus is 2.5% fatal in the general population then for every person dead, there were probably 39 ot...

Re: "COVID-19 Bug In tips exchange"

Not sure if it's a bug-in tip or not, but I've got a little (1/2 oz, or so) pocket-sized spray bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Or I did, until it ran out today. So I've refilled it with the denatured alcohol I use in my Traangia alcohol stove. It doesnt't smell of lime much anymore, and I m...

Re: "COVID-19 Bug In tips exchange"

That was me with the thermos cooking. I use a plastic microwaveable one as it means that I can preheat with everything together and reheat after a while (with the top off) to speed it up a bit. Don't overfill or the food may expand and try to break your thermos. It is a good idea to match cooking ra...

Re: "Daily COVID-19 SITREP In Your Area"

Bristol (UK) has everyone buying more food, toilet paper and soap. Pasta seems to be the preping food of choice. We haven't got locked down like Spain or Italy yet (I'd give it 1-2 weeks). The cheaper retailers have had less panic buying. I got soap a while back but then had to go out and buy moistu...

Re: COVID-19 Thread

Hi All, I've not been on here in a couple of years. I think UK has lost any chance of containment. Working back from the current death rates to their likely infection point and then forward, increasing the infected using the confirmed cases numbers gives something around 100 000 people currently in...

Re: Wuhan Coronavirus Thread

One thing worth considering is that this is an active virus. There will be a delay between someone being ill enough to go to hospital (becoming a confirmed case) and dying. If you have a weeks delay and the virus is trebling every week then the deaths associated with the current confirmed cases will...

Re: Beeman RS2 Dual-Caliber Air Rifle Combo

Nice shooting. You might want to put a back stop behind the target. I use a paving slab that is angled a bit downwards so any debris drops in front of the target. The pellets self destruct when they hit it.

Re: Upgraded the bear defense.

Is there a 21 feet rule for bears? Or is it 30 feet plus because bears have 4 legs and can probably accelerate faster? What was the range on one of those sprays again?

Re: Low Profile Protection for Your Nugget

Bullet energy is absorbed over distance, energy absorbed is force x distance. If you stick a solid, rigid object behind the flexible energy absorber the force goes up until the rigid object fails. The new force x distance has a higher force and lower distance to absorb the same energy. Unfortunately...

Re: Lightweight, low-recoil pest control shotgun

Another idea if your main target is squirrels and birds would be an air rifle. The diablo pellet shape is very accurate but not aerodynamic, so they run out of energy in 100-200 yards. No good for big stuff or defense and really good ones are expensive. Plenty of the cheaper ones are child sized/wei...

Re: Lightweight, low-recoil pest control shotgun

Can you get low recoil loads for your 12 gauge? 3/4 oz of shot is still 3/4 oz of shot, whether from a 12 or 410. Maybe even a short double barrel as the extra weight will make the recoil less. Or a cheap .22lr rifle- they can be very light and will easily deal with most critters if you upgrade with...

Re: So whats a good weapon to defend your supplies? No guns

Spear. Cut a long, straight branch/trunk off a tree. Use a knife to cut it to a 8' by 1" pole. Attach knife to end of pole. Tada!
The most effective battle weapon until they stopped relying on bayonet charges.

Re: HPA Air Rifle

It depends....... If you want to do serious competitive target shooting then you will need something similar to what everyone else is shooting. For field target, a pre- charged pneumatic air gun like a HW100 is ideal. For Olympic style then something like an Anschutz. For fun target shooting, any HP...

It looks like there is another small outbreak in the Congo.

Given that the average health expenditure per capita is 45 dollars (5.6% of 800 dollars GDP per capita), I hope the WHO does something soon.

Re: Robot Uprising - Or, what to do when AI Does All The Job

Pretty much all modern cars are networked, as soon as their owners Bluetooth link in a phone. From the phone to the entertainment system to the engine management system, it is all data links. The banking industry has seen huge job losses due to computers. It isn't just ATMs, it is online banking tha...

Re: No Guns here

No firearms means nothing with a barrel launching a potentially lethal projectile except airguns or CO2 guns which are under 12ftlb. In Scotland, they licence all airguns to. No hunting allowed with anything which launches an arrow. Weapons shooting stones and bullets can be used for hunting.

K31 if you can get one (and ammunition/cases). One of the best military bolt actions ever.

Re: Rural home invasion – barricade or run for it?

Call police, hide, take pictures with phone. Riskier would be to wait until they go inside and quietly disable their vehicles (if left unattended) or shoot the guy with the vehicles from inside the tree line. Then run and let the police deal with the remainder. It could make a pretty good "B" movie ...

Re: No Guns here

Unless you have a criminal history, you can get a shotgun. No "good reason" needed. You will need a cabinet for the gun but not the cartridges. It isn't difficult, particularly in the wilds of Scotland where they are not worried about gang violence. You fill in a form, buy a cabinet and be nice to t...
